New Delhi: Educationist and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s fast at Jantar Mantar entered its 17th day on Tuesday. There is increasing concern about his health. According to his supporters, due to the prolonged hunger strike, he has lost about 8.5 kg in weight and is showing signs of weakness in his body.
Sharing information about Wangchuk’s health, Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijit Deepke said that his muscles are becoming weak and he is facing constant pain. He also appealed to Sonam Wangchuk to end the fast, but Wangchuk said that he would continue the movement for his demands.
Increased concern about health
Abhijeet Deepke said in a post on social media platform He said that Wangchuk’s physical condition was weakening due to not taking food for a long time. Deepke said that he also personally spoke to Wangchuk and urged him to end the hunger strike considering his health.
According to Deepke, Wangchuk replied that instead of asking him to end the fast, the government should be asked why the dialogue process was not being initiated.
Appeal for talks with the government
Abhijeet Deepke appealed to the government not to make this movement an issue of prestige or ego. He said that human lives are involved in this protest and it is necessary to find a solution through dialogue. He also said that accepting one’s mistake is not a sign of weakness but a sign of responsibility and democratic maturity. According to him, a permanent solution to any dispute can be found only through the process of dialogue and reform.
Sonam Wangchuk’s movement has received support from many political leaders. Leaders of various parties reached Jantar Mantar and expressed support for their demonstration. Among these leaders:

Mahua Moitra appealed to end the fast
TMC MP Mahua Moitra urged Sonam Wangchuk to end her hunger strike through social media. He wrote that Wangchuk’s movement has united the youth and common people on issues of justice and rights. He said that the objective of the movement has reached the people and now health should be given priority.
Mahua Moitra also targeted the government and said that the government should take the concerns of Wangchuk and the youth seriously. He appealed that Wangchuk should end his fast and continue the struggle for his demands in a democratic manner.
Sonam Wangchuk has been raising her voice on issues related to environment, education and regional rights for a long time. Their current movement at Jantar Mantar is also being said to be based on demands related to these issues. His supporters say that this demonstration demands accountability and dialogue from the government. At the same time, people associated with the movement have appealed that a solution should be found through talks so that Wangchuk’s health is not seriously affected.
