India’s impressive performance continued on the eighth day of the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Indian athletes showcased their strength in javelin throw, judo, and athletics, winning a total of six medals. These include two gold, two silver, and two bronze. While star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra had to settle for a silver medal, young Indian thrower Yashvir Singh surprised everyone by winning a bronze medal with a personal best. India has now won 23 medals, with five gold, 12 silver, and six bronze medals, placing it 10th in the medal tally.
Javelin Throw: Neeraj Chopra misses gold, Sri Lanka’s Rumesh wins
India won two medals in the javelin throw event. Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal with a best throw of 85.83 meters. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathiraje won the gold medal with a massive throw of 89.75 meters. India’s Yashvir Singh was the biggest surprise in the competition, winning the bronze medal with a personal best throw of 85.41 meters. Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem had a disappointing performance, failing to even make the top eight, and was eliminated after three rounds.
Tejaswin Shankar Creates History in Decathlon
India’s Tejaswin Shankar achieved a major feat in athletics. He won the bronze medal in the decathlon event with a score of 7976 points. With this, he became the first Indian athlete to win a medal in the decathlon event in Commonwealth Games history. Grenada’s Lyndon Victor (8096 points) won the gold, while Damien Warner (8036 points) won the silver. Tejaswin has previously won a bronze medal in the high jump at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
India’s Golden Day in Judo: Historic Golds for Asmita and Harsh
On the eighth day of the Games, India made history in judo. 23-year-old Asmita Dey of Tripura won India’s first judo gold medal in Commonwealth Games history. She made a remarkable comeback in the final, defeating Canada’s Heidi Quach by a golden score. Just 15 minutes after Asmita’s historic victory, 23-year-old Harsh Singh defeated Australia’s Joshua Katz 10-0 (waza-ari) in the men’s 60kg final to add to India’s second gold medal.
In the women’s 57kg final, Yamini Maurya lost to England’s Asselya Toprak after a tough battle and had to settle for a silver medal.
India shines in boxing too, 10 boxers in finals
Indian boxers dominated the boxing ring as well. All 10 Indian boxers reached the finals of their respective events, ensuring several more medals for India. In the women’s category, Preeti Pawar, Sakshi Chaudhary, Jasmine Lamboria, Arundhati Chaudhary, Priya Ghanghas, and Lovlina Borgohain will fight for the gold medal. In the men’s category, Ankush Panghal, Jadumani Singh, Sachin Siwach, and Narendra Berwal will compete in the finals.
