Gyanvapi dispute: Mediation efforts inconclusive, both sides refused to compromise
New Delhi. The possibility of a settlement in the much talked about Gyanvapi dispute of Varanasi seems to be over at the moment. In the hearing held on Tuesday under the mediation process, both the temple and mosque parties clearly refused any kind of agreement. Both of them described the court’s decision as final and acceptable.

The parties and their advocates related to four different files were present during the hearing. Opinion was taken from everyone regarding mediation, but no party expressed willingness to compromise. With this, the mediation process started on the instructions of the Supreme Court ended without any result. Advocate Rekha Pathak, Shailendra Pathak and other lawyers were present on behalf of the temple side. He said that the Gyanvapi complex is basically a temple and one should be given the right to worship there. He also said that puja was already going on in the basement of the complex, hence no question of compromise arises.
On behalf of the mosque side, representatives of Anjuman Arrangement Masjid Committee and advocates also participated in the hearing. Although earlier there was talk of his distancing himself from the mediation process, he reached the court and expressed his views. The mosque side also stuck to its legal stand and said that the dispute would be resolved only through the court.
The claims of both the parties regarding the Gyanvapi complex are pending in the courts for a long time. The Hindu side says that the remains of the ancient Adi Vishveshwar temple are present beneath the mosque, while the Muslim side says that the site is Waqf property and cites the Places of Worship Act, 1991, which prohibits change in the nature of religious places after August 15, 1947.
In this case, both the parties have different claims regarding the ASI survey conducted earlier. At present, various cases related to Gyanvapi controversy are pending in Varanasi District Court, Allahabad High Court and Supreme Court. Now everyone’s eyes are on the further hearing and the court’s decision.
