Saturday (August 1) added more medals to India’s growing tally at the Commonwealth Games, with boxers Preeti Pawar and Jaismine Lamboria winning gold in their respective events and para shot putters Soman Rana (13.40m) and Shubham Juyal (13.28m) clinching F57-category gold and silver, respectively.
The boxers’ victories came after India enjoyed another successful day on Friday (August 31), collecting medals in athletics and sending a large group of boxers into the finals. With Saturday’s performance, India’s medal tally went up to 29, including seven gold.
Boxing brings more gold
Preeti won the women’s 54kg title after defeating Canada’s Scarlett Savannah Delgado by a unanimous 5-0 decision. Jaismine followed with a 5-0 victory over defending champion Michaela Walsh of Northern Ireland in the women’s 57kg final. Jaismine had taken bronze at the previous Commonwealth Games and improved that result with gold this time.

India’s boxing campaign is set to continue later on Saturday with finals involving Jadumani Singh, Sakshi Chaudhary, Priya Ghanghas, Arundhati Choudhary, Lovlina Borgohain, Sachin Siwach, Ankush Panghal and Narender Berwal.
Athletics delivers medals
The strong start on Saturday followed a productive Friday for the Indian contingent. Neeraj Chopra picked up the silver medal in the men’s javelin after recording 85.83m with his second throw, his best effort of the season.

The Olympic champion, competing after returning from a lower back injury, briefly moved into the lead before Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage threw 89.75m to claim gold. Pathirage’s winning effort came in difficult weather, with the event held in cold and windy conditions.
Two more bronze
India also celebrated a bronze through Yashvir Singh, who competed at the Commonwealth Games for the first time. The 24-year-old produced a personal best throw of 85.41m with his sixth and final attempt after sitting seventh before the last round. Rohit Yadav finished seventh with 81.56m as India ended the event with two athletes on the podium.

Another medal came through Tejaswin Shankar, who became the first Indian to win a decathlon medal at the Commonwealth Games. The national record holder collected 7,976 points to finish third despite competing with chronic patellar tendinitis. Tejaswin moved into the bronze-medal position after the javelin and stayed there following the final 1500m event.
India’s boxers had earned those title opportunities by winning their semifinal bouts on Friday. Arundhati Choudhary upset defending champion Rosie Eccles, while Lovlina Borgohain, Jaismine Lamboria, Preeti Pawar, Sakshi Chaudhary, Priya Ghanghas, Jadumani Singh, Ankush Panghal and Narender Berwal also advanced to their respective finals. Their performances ensured India entered Saturday with medal hopes across several weight categories.
Judo creates history
India also celebrated a landmark achievement in judo after Asmita Dey became the country’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medallist in the sport. The 23-year-old defeated Canada’s Heidi Quach in the women’s 48kg final, recovering after falling behind early before sealing victory in the golden score period.
Her triumph ended India’s long wait for a Commonwealth Games judo title since the sport was introduced in 1990. Dey’s feat drew praise from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, while Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna hailed the UP Police sub-inspector for scripting history.
