Has English also become the language of India? Supreme Court’s important comment on CBSE’s three language policy

The Three Language Policy of CBSE has been brought under the New Education Policy (NEP) with the aim of promoting Indian languages. Its aim is to give students knowledge of more than one language and to strengthen the linguistic diversity of the country. Under the policy, it has been said that students will be given the opportunity to learn Hindi and any other Indian language along with English. However, many questions have also been raised among students and parents regarding this policy. Some people believe that learning an additional language can be a challenge for students amidst the already existing study pressure. At the same time, language experts say that multilingual education can improve children’s understanding and learning ability.

During the hearing in the Supreme Court, it was argued that the 22 official languages ​​of India should be protected and promoted. In this context the court questioned the role of English. The court said that India is among the largest English speaking countries in the world. English is used officially in many states and a large part of the work in the country’s judiciary is also done in English. English is used as the official language in states like Nagaland and Meghalaya. Apart from this, legal proceedings in the Supreme Court and many High Courts are mainly conducted in English. In such a situation, it is not easy to separate English as a completely foreign language.

However, the court’s comment does not mean that English has been included in the list of Indian languages. This is simply an important question regarding the current role and influence of English in India. In the times to come, it will be a big challenge to strike a balance between education policy, preservation of Indian languages ​​and the increasing influence of English.
