Amidst the increasing military tension between America and Iran and the horrific bombing, a big and relief diplomatic news has come to light. Iran has freed Dena Karari, a US-Iranian dual citizen woman who was held hostage in its country for the last one and a half year (December 2024). Human rights lawyer Jared Genser and US President Donald Trump have officially confirmed his release. Trump gave it a "goodwill gesture" (Gesture of Goodwill) has been mentioned. Who is Dena Karari and why was she stopped? Was trapped since December 2024: Dena Karari is a woman with dual citizenship of America and Iran. She went to Iran in December 2024, but since then the Iranian administration had imposed restrictions on her. There were ‘fake’ allegations of espionage: The Iran government had made serious allegations against Dena of espionage and collaborating with an opposing country (America). Currently, there are fierce air strikes and military confrontation going on between America and Iran, due to which there is an atmosphere of war in the Gulf countries. At such a dangerous time, back-channel diplomacy was at work behind Dena’s release: US State Department’s list: The US State Department had handed over a list of Americans who were wrongfully detained by Iran to Steve Witkoff, the US special envoy leading diplomacy with Iran. Dena Karari’s name was prominently included in this list. Donald Trump’s efforts: Dena’s lawyer posted on the social media platform Safe return: Immediately after her release, Dana Karari was safely evacuated from Iran and flew to the US. President Trump has confirmed that his health is now fine. Is this part of the US-Iran deal? It is noteworthy that only last month, a mutual agreement (MoU) was made between America and Iran regarding ceasefire, which is now under threat after the recent attacks. According to defense experts, the release of the detained Americans was not part of that MoU. In such a situation, despite reaching the peak phase of the war, Iran’s leaving Dena Karari is considered a very unexpected step diplomatically. However, many other American citizens like Kamran Hekmati and Reza Valizadeh are still lodged in Iran’s infamous ‘Evin Prison’, for whom the US administration is continuously putting pressure to bring them back.
