At such a dangerous time, back-channel diplomacy was at work behind Dena’s release: US State Department’s list: The US State Department had handed over a list of Americans who were wrongfully detained by Iran to Steve Witkoff, the US special envoy leading diplomacy with Iran. Dena Karari’s name was prominently included in this list. It is noteworthy that only last month, a mutual agreement (MoU) was made between America and Iran regarding ceasefire, which is now under threat after the recent attacks. According to defense experts, the release of the detained Americans was not part of that MoU. In such a situation, despite reaching the peak phase of the war, Iran’s leaving Dena Karari is considered a very unexpected step diplomatically. However, many other American citizens like Kamran Hekmati and Reza Valizadeh are still lodged in Iran’s infamous ‘Evin Prison’, for whom the US administration is continuously putting pressure to bring them back.
