Shocking revelation in new research on diabetes, not only obesity, weak muscles are also a big reason

Sydney. A new and large international study has made shocking revelations about type-2 diabetes. Till now it was believed that obesity or increased fat in the body is the biggest cause of diabetes. But researchers at Curtin University have changed this perception. According to new research, reducing body fat alone is not enough, but muscle weakness and low mass also increases the risk of type-2 diabetes manifold.

The risk of diabetes increases three and a half times

For this study published in the world famous medical journal ‘Diabetes Care’, researchers conducted an in-depth analysis of the health data of about 4.8 lakh adults for 14 years. Then research revealed that when the amount of fat in the body is high and the muscles are very weak, then it is called ‘Sarcopenic Obesity’ in medical science. In such a situation, the risk of diabetes increases to more than three and a half times that of a normal person.

Muscle weakness is more dangerous than obesity alone.

According to the study data, people with sarcopenic obesity had a 19 percent higher risk of developing diabetes than people with only obesity. According to leading researchers from the ‘Curtin School of Population Health’, about 15 percent of people suffering from it develop type-2 diabetes within 10 years. This type of risk was especially seen among women and youth below 60 years of age.

How do weak muscles become villains?

According to medical experts, the muscles of our body do the main work of absorbing glucose from the blood and digesting insulin. When muscles are weak or depleted, the body’s ability to absorb glucose is reduced, causing insulin resistance. This is the reason why many times even normal weight or thin looking people become victims of diabetes due to muscle weakness.

Experts have opined that it is not only important to lose weight but also to build muscles. Professor ‘Mario Siervo’, senior author of this study, has warned health systems that now instead of just measuring the patient’s weight or BMI (Body Mass Index), doctors should also check their muscle health (Muscle Quality). To prevent diabetes, experts have advised doing weight lifting exercises instead of just doing cardio or walking and including enough protein in the diet, so that along with reducing fat in the body, the muscles also remain strong.
