5 Rules of the Kanwar Yatra

1. Do Not Place the Kanwar on the Ground – During this journey, Kanwariyas should not place their Kanwar on the ground. According to religious belief, placing a Kanwar filled with water on the ground is considered inappropriate. If a devotee accidentally places the Kanwar on the ground, they should bring it back filled with water. It is believed that performing Jalabhishek with water from a Kanwar placed on the ground does not bring Lord Shiva’s blessings and the puja is considered incomplete.

2. Take Water from a Holy River – Kanwar pilgrims should ensure that they only take water from a flowing holy river. Water from a well or pond should not be used for the Kanwar.

3. Avoid Tamasic Food and Intoxicants – Devotees should avoid consuming Tamasic foods, such as garlic, onion, meat, and fish, during the Yatra. They should also completely abstain from alcohol, cigarettes, gutkha, and other intoxicants.
