Akshar Patel created history, became the sixth Indian to achieve this feat
New Delhi, 16 July 2026: Axar Patel created history India won against England by 6 wickets in the first ODI, in which Shubhman Gilley played a brilliant inning of 80 runs. Akshar Patel and Washington Sundar scored unmarried half centuries. Earlier, Patel had shown excellent bowling and taken the maximum of 4 wickets in the match – which enabled India to restrict England to a total score of 258 runs. In this match, all-rounder Patel achieved a feat which only five other Indian players could achieve earlier.
In the first ODI played at Edgbaston, England won the toss and decided to bat first. Gurnoor Brare dismissed both the openers, Ben Duckett (43) and Jacob Bethel (14), while Harry Brooke was bowled by Jasprit Bumrah for 1 run. Axar Patel took the wickets of four English batsmen including Liam Dawson. With his half-century, Patel created history, joining Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh in an elite club.

Axar Patel has become the sixth Indian player to take four or more wickets and score more than 50 runs in a single ODI match. Before him, only Chris Srikkanth, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh and Hardik Pandya had achieved this feat. Ganguly and Pandya had achieved this feat twice during their respective ODI careers. Now, Patel also joins this list of stalwarts.
Akshar Patel was declared ‘Player of the Match’ in the first one-day match. Patel is the oldest Indian player to take four or more wickets and score more than 50 runs in a single match; Earlier this record was in the name of Yuvraj Singh.
