Father was against films, hence the change in name
In an interview given in the 1970s, Dilip Kumar himself revealed this secret. He revealed that his father, Lala Ghulam Sarwar Ali Khan, was strongly against working in films. Prithviraj Kapoor, son of his close friend Lala Basheshar Nath, was already working in films, and his father often expressed his displeasure over this. Dilip Kumar said that his father often told him that he had made a wrong decision by sending his son to films. In such an environment, when he entered films, his biggest fear was that his father might find out. This fear forced him to hide his real identity.
Just don’t keep it as Yusuf Khan
Dilip Kumar revealed in an interview that when it came to choosing a screen name, he was presented with several options. These included names like Yusuf Khan, Dilip Kumar, and Basudev. He said that he himself said, “Just don’t keep my name as Yusuf Khan, you can keep any other name.” About two or three months later, he saw an advertisement in which his new name, Dilip Kumar, was printed for the first time. That very day, he realized that the entire film industry would now recognize him by this name.
Devika Rani gave him the name ‘Dilip Kumar’
Dilip Kumar also recounts this entire incident in detail in his autobiography, “The Substance and the Shadow.” He wrote that Devika Rani, the head of Bombay Talkies and a veteran actress, suggested this name to him. His first film, “Jwar Bhata,” was also made under the Bombay Talkies banner. Devika Rani believed that the name “Dilip Kumar” would be more effective for the image of a romantic hero and would be easily popular with audiences. In his autobiography, Dilip Kumar wrote that Devika Rani told him casually, “Yusuf, I’m going to launch you as an actor soon. I think it would be easier for audiences to remember you if you adopt a screen name. I think the name ‘Dilip Kumar’ would suit your romantic image very well.” Dilip Kumar accepted this suggestion, and this name later became one of the most iconic in the history of Indian cinema.

Devika Rani’s decision later proved to be historic. During his long film career, Dilip Kumar delivered memorable films and set an example of acting that even today inspires new actors.
