Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath congratulated the Indian contingent on their performance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026, where India secured 39 medals, including 13 golds.
In a post on X on August 3, 2026, Yogi Adityanath described the achievement as a “glorious chapter” in India’s sporting journey and praised the athletes for their outstanding performances. He wrote, “A glorious chapter in India’s sporting journey! Heartiest congratulations to our exceptional athletes for their stellar performance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026, winning 39 medals, including 13 Golds.”
The Chief Minister highlighted India’s achievements in several disciplines, stating, “From India’s finest-ever performance in Boxing to historic achievements in Athletics, Judo and Para-Athletics, our athletes have scripted many memorable firsts and brought immense pride to the nation.”
He also attributed the success to the country’s sporting ecosystem, emphasising sustained focus on infrastructure, athlete welfare, and grassroots talent development. Yogi Adityanath said, “These accomplishments reflect the transformative sporting ecosystem nurtured under the visionary leadership of PM @narendramodi, with sustained emphasis on world-class infrastructure, athlete welfare and identification of grassroots talent.”
Yogi Adityanath extended congratulations to the athletes, coaches, and support staff for their dedication, adding, “Congratulations to every athlete, coach and member of the support staff. Your discipline, determination and dedication will inspire generations. Jai Hind!”
The 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded after 11 days of competition, with Scotland formally handing over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India during a closing ceremony. India is set to host the centenary edition of the Games in 2030 in Ahmedabad.
This will make India only the second country, after Australia, to host the Commonwealth Games more than once. India previously hosted the Games in New Delhi in 2010.
The flag and baton were presented to Indian representatives including Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.
India finished fourth in the medals table with 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze medals. Although this tally was lower than the 61 medals won at Birmingham in 2022, the comparison is affected by changes in the sports included; 30 medals in 2022 came from sports dropped in 2026.
India sent 122 athletes to Glasgow, compared to 210 in 2022, yet maintained its fourth-place finish with an improved medal conversion rate. Thirty-eight Indian athletes won medals, with long-distance runner Gulveer Singh being the only competitor to secure two medals.
With the ceremonial handover complete, attention now turns to Ahmedabad and preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
