Every parent wants their child to be full of confidence and face every challenge in life with courage. But sometimes, some parental habits, without even realizing it, weaken their child’s self-confidence. Although no parent intentionally wants to undermine their child’s self-confidence, a child’s mind is very delicate and they learn very quickly from their surroundings. If parents say things at home that undermine a child’s self-confidence, it can be detrimental. It is believed that emotional support received during childhood lays the foundation for a child’s self-confidence in the future. Therefore, it is important for every parent to know whether they too are unknowingly making mistakes that are causing their child to lose self-confidence and are unable to tell anyone.
Sometimes, many parents become angry at their child’s mistakes and start comparing them to other children. For example, if a child scores poorly on an exam and their neighbor’s child scores better, parents often compare their child to others. Hearing such things, the child feels bad and worthless, weakening their self-confidence.
Regarding another mistake, parents often scold their children harshly for their mistakes. It’s important for them to understand that they are children and often make mistakes because they are still learning. If children are repeatedly scolded for their mistakes, they become afraid to try anything new. They feel that making a mistake is a very bad thing and that if they do, they will be scolded again, so they stop trying.
When a child is scared, sad, or upset and their parents say, “Stop crying over such a small thing” or “It’s no big deal,” the child feels that their feelings don’t matter. Later, the child begins to hide their feelings and thoughts. They feel that no one will understand them. This weakens their self-confidence, which directly impacts their self-esteem.
Many parents, in the name of helping their children, take on all the tasks themselves, such as packing their school bags, choosing clothes, or making decisions. This deprives the child of the opportunity to do things on their own. When a child doesn’t make an effort on their own, they lose confidence in their abilities. Gradually, they become dependent on their parents for even the smallest things.
It’s important to praise a child when they do something well, but many parents focus only on their shortcomings. However, parents do this for the child’s own good, so that they don’t ignore their shortcomings, address them, and become more successful. However, praise should be given even for small things. This motivates them to do better. Even after they get good marks, saying things like, “If you had worked harder, you would have gotten better marks” doesn’t respect the child’s hard work. The child feels that no matter how well they perform, it’s never enough, which undermines their self-confidence.
Some parents scold their child in front of relatives, friends, or guests, or expose their weaknesses publicly. This causes the child to feel deeply embarrassed and begins to feel inferior. Repeated embarrassment can lead to a fear of public speaking and expressing their opinions, which directly impacts their self-confidence.
Many parents want their child to do what they want, whether it’s a subject of study or a hobby. Their own preferences and opinions are often ignored. When a child doesn’t have the opportunity to choose something of their own free will, they feel that their decisions don’t matter. This leads to a loss of self-confidence and a hesitation in making confident decisions.
