Former Congress President and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is on Uttarakhand tour. Rahul Gandhi will participate in the ‘Students’ Echo’ program and address the youth. Everyone from former Chief Minister Harish Rawat to current Congress President Ganesh Godiyal is waiting for Rahul Gandhi. The political results for Congress in Uttarakhand have been consecutive setbacks. Has been out of the state for almost a decade. Now assembly elections are going to be held in 2027, before that the party is busy in election preparations. The results have not been meaningful yet. Neither in the Assembly nor in the Lok Sabha has Congress achieved much success. There are 5 Lok Sabha seats in the state, not even a single MP is in BJP.

Congress stuck on ‘face’ in Uttarakhand?
Congress has faces in Uttarakhand but the party is not yet expressing confidence in any one face. This deficiency was not visible in Uttarakhand until Harish Singh Rawat was in the CM race. Now he is 78 years old. Now Congress is avoiding taking chances on him in active politics.

Congress had recently formed a new state committee in Uttarakhand. Kumari Shailja has been chosen in-charge of the new committee. Leaders like Prakash Joshi, Tilak Raj Behad, Mamta Rakesh, Vikram Singh Negi, Ganesh Godiyal, Yashpal Arya, Harish Rawat, Pritam Singh, Gurdeep Singh Sappal, Qazi Nizamuddin, Karan Mahara, Harak Singh Rawat, Bhuvan Kapri, Govind Singh Kunjwal, Pradeep Tamta, Mahendra Pal Singh and Brahm Swaroop Brahmachari are included. A total of 23 people have been given place in the committee.

What is responsibility?
According to sources, Ganesh Godiyal seems to be most active on the ground. Harish Rawat is trekking, reaching hilly areas at various places and interacting with people. This time he is not the face of the post of Chief Minister.
Will there be discord over leadership after Rahul Gandhi’s arrival?
The claim for leadership in Uttarakhand Congress regarding the 2027 assembly elections has intensified. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Yashpal Arya is getting huge support within the party. Arya, who comes from the Kumaon region, is one of the prominent faces of the Dalit society and his popularity is quite high among the common people too. His supporters are seeing him as the future Chief Minister.
State Congress Committee President Ganesh Godiyal is taking charge of the organization. He is also seeing himself in the race for Chief Minister candidate. Former state president Pritam Singh also considers himself an important contender in the hilly areas.
Harak Singh Rawat is one of the undisputed big leaders of Garhwal. Bhuvan Chandra Kapri’s stature in Congress has reached that of Deputy Leader in the Assembly. Leaders like Rajkumar Thukral, Narayan Pal, Bhimlal Arya, Gaurav Goyal and Lakhan Singh Negi are also now in the hope that Rahul Gandhi and the top leadership of Congress will give them big responsibility.

How is Congress falling apart in figures?
Congress is out of power in Uttarakhand since 2017. Harish Rawat was the Chief Minister for the last time. In every subsequent election, the Congress party suffered a crushing defeat. Congress remained out in the year 2017 also, in 2022 also the party suffered a crushing defeat.
There are 70 assembly seats in Uttarakhand. In the 2017 elections, Congress contested the elections under the leadership of Harish Rawat. The party was reduced to just 11 seats and BJP was reduced to 57 seats. This was a big victory for BJP. Two other candidates won.
Congress’s seats increased by 7 in the 2022 elections. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami himself lost his seat. Congress wins 19 seats in 2022. BJP gained lead on 47 seats. Bahujan Samaj Party also got 2 seats.

What can Rahul Gandhi do now?
There was discord between Captain Amarinder Singh and Navjot Singh Sidhu in Punjab Congress, Congress lost power. In Rajasthan, the mutual politics between Sachin Pilot and Ashok Gehlot had an impact in the assembly elections. In the states where Congress lost ground, discord was a major reason. Congress no longer wants such a conflict in Uttarakhand.
This time Congress has entrusted the leaders with the responsibility of strengthening the organization by staying on the ground. Till now no one face has been given importance. According to sources, this could also be Congress’s strategy. Wherever the face is announced, discord starts there, this time Uttarakhand Congress has been saved from the situation of discord, for the first time all the leaders are seen together in a queue. This visit of Rahul Gandhi is being considered as the formal beginning of the election campaign.
