Guwahati: Presenting the budget for the financial year 2026-27, the Assam government has announced several ambitious projects to give a new impetus to the state’s infrastructure, transport, tourism, energy and urban development. A provision of ₹10,000 crore has been made for Asommala Phase-IV in the budget presented by Finance Minister Jayant Malla Barua under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The government says that this budget is not just an annual financial document, but part of the comprehensive development strategy to make Assam a developed state in the next five years.

Provision of ₹10,000 crore for Asommala Phase-IV

One of the biggest announcements of the budget is Asomala Phase-IV. Under this project, about 800 kilometers of new long distance roads will be constructed in the state. According to the government, under previous projects in Assam, 880 km of roads and 34 bridges were built, on which approximately ₹3,217 crore was spent. The new project aims to connect remote areas of the state with better road connectivity, speed up goods transportation and boost regional economic activities.

Announcement of two high-speed economic corridors

The budget has announced the development of two new high-speed economic corridors. The first corridor will be built from Guwahati to Silchar, which is expected to reduce the current travel time of around 10 hours to 5 hours. The second high-speed corridor will connect Guwahati and Siliguri, further facilitating trade and traffic between Northeast India and other parts of the country. Experts believe that these corridors will give a new direction to industrial investment, logistics and tourism.

Railways and tourism will get a boost

The state government has also included a plan to develop a new railway line up to Umrangso in the budget. The objective of this project is to promote tourism activities and provide better rail connectivity to remote areas. Apart from this, plans have also been announced to develop five star hotels in Manas National Park, Haflong and Umrangso to provide better facilities to domestic and international tourists.

Air connectivity will become stronger

Many new projects have been announced in the budget to strengthen the transport sector. Rupsi airport in Dhubri district will be upgraded, which is expected to strengthen trade links with Bhutan and Bangladesh. Apart from this, the plan for construction of Dolu Greenfield Airport in Silchar will also be taken forward. The state government believes that better air connectivity will benefit all three sectors: investment, tourism and trade.

Flyover will be built from Guwahati Airport to the city

To ease the traffic in the capital Guwahati, it has been announced to build a flyover from Guwahati Airport to Jalukbari. The government claims that after the completion of this project, it will take less than 10 minutes to reach the entrance of the city from the airport. This project is considered important in view of the increasing urban traffic.

Government’s special focus on green energy

The Assam government has also announced major investments in the energy sector. Pumped storage power projects will be developed in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts, which will increase the green energy potential of the state. The government aims to promote clean energy production and meet future energy needs in a sustainable manner.

Guwahati will become a modern urban center

Under urban development, a plan has been made to develop Aero City in Guwahati. Along with this, a satellite township will be developed around the city, so that the rapidly increasing population and urban expansion can be managed. The government believes that these projects will develop Guwahati into a modern, planned and investment-friendly metropolis.

Focus will be on industrial development and employment

The budget also emphasizes on road, rail, airport and energy projects as well as attracting industrial investment. Better transport network will reduce costs for industries, bring in new investments and increase employment opportunities. Experts believe that strong infrastructure is the cornerstone of the economic progress of any state.

Roadmap for developed Assam

The government has clarified that the target has been set to make Assam a developed state in the next five years. For this, investment will be made equally on infrastructure, modern transport, digital connectivity, green energy, tourism and industrial development. If the announced projects are completed on schedule, Assam can become one of the major economic and logistics hubs of Northeast India.
