End of an era! West Indies all-rounder Sir Garfield Sobers passes away; Mourning the cricket world

New Delhi : A sad news has come out from the world of cricket. Great West Indies all-rounder Garfield Sobers passed away. Sobers breathed his last at the age of 89. Sobers’ passing marks the end of an era. He played 93 Tests and one ODI in his career.

Born on 28 July 1936 in Barbados, Sir Garfield Sobers scored 8032 runs in 160 Test innings at an average of 57.78. During this period he also scored 30 fifties and 26 centuries. His best score in this form of cricket was 365 not out. This great all-rounder of West Indies was also adept at bowling. He took 235 wickets in 159 innings in 93 Test matches. His bowling average was 34.03 and economy rate was 2.22. He also held the record of taking 5 wickets six times and 4 wickets eight times. His best bowling performance in a match is 8/80.

Meanwhile, West Indies Cricket announced the death of Sobers. The board wrote on social media, “An era of great innings has come to an end. Sir Garfield Sobers will live in our hearts now and forever”.

Sobers made his ODI debut on 5 September 1973. He did not score a single run in this only ODI of his career. However, they took 1 wicket. The West Indies all-rounder also excelled in domestic cricket. He has scored 28314 runs and taken 1043 wickets in 383 first-class matches, while he has 2721 runs and 109 wickets in 95 List A matches.

Sir Garfield Sobers was born on July 28, 1936 in Barbados. He gave a new identity to cricket with his excellent game. He was an excellent batsman and was adept at both fast-medium pace and spin bowling. His agility in the field and excellent fielding made him one of the best fielders of his generation.
