World Crocodile Day: Crocodiles play an important role in maintaining environmental balance, why is their conservation important?

World Crocodile Day 2026: World Crocodile Day is celebrated every year on 17 June. The purpose of this day is to make people aware about the different species of crocodiles and their conservation across the world. Conservation of their natural habitat is equally important.

Although crocodiles are often considered dangerous creatures, they are an extremely important part of our ecosystem. They play an important role in maintaining the balance of rivers, lakes and marshy areas.

Why is World Crocodile Day celebrated?

World Crocodile Day was started to make people understand that crocodiles are not just a prey animal but an important part of biodiversity. Many crocodile species are endangered in many parts of the world due to hunting, illegal trafficking, pollution and habitat destruction.

On this occasion, forest department, wildlife conservation organizations and environment related organizations make people aware about the conservation of crocodiles and their importance.

Mainly three types of crocodiles are found in India-

• Magar or Magri
• Alligator
• salt water crocodile

Of these, the crocodile species is counted in the most endangered category, while crocodiles are found in the rivers and reservoirs of many states of the country. Odisha is the only state in India where all three native crocodile species of the country – the Gharial Magar or crocodile and the Saltwater crocodile – are found naturally.

Why is Vadodara of Gujarat special?

Vadodara city of Gujarat is especially known for crocodiles. A large number of crocodiles are found in the Vishwamitri river flowing here. When the water level rises during the rainy season, many times these crocodiles come out of the river and reach residential areas, due to which the forest department has to catch them safely and release them back into the river.

How is this day celebrated?

Awareness campaigns, exhibitions, wildlife conservation programs, competitions in schools and seminars are organized in different countries on World Crocodile Day. Experts tell people why it is important to conserve their natural habitat by keeping a safe distance from crocodiles.

Why is conservation of crocodiles important?

Experts believe that crocodiles play an important role in keeping the ecosystem of reservoirs balanced. If their numbers continuously decrease, aquatic biodiversity and natural food chains may also be affected. Therefore, their conservation is considered necessary not only for wildlife but also for environmental balance.

Special things about crocodiles

• Crocodiles are the largest living reptiles in the world.
• They mainly live in freshwater marshy areas, rivers and lakes, while the saltwater crocodile is also found in marine and coastal areas.
• Crocodiles are nocturnal, meaning they are more active at night.
• The body temperature of crocodile varies according to the surrounding environment.

Crocodile population in India

• About 80% of the world’s wild crocodiles are found in India. At present their number in the country is around 3,000.
• Gharials are mainly found in National Chambal Sanctuary, Katraniya Ghat Wildlife Sanctuary and Son Gharial Sanctuary.
• At the same time, the number of salt water crocodiles has increased to about 2,500. They are mainly found in Bhitarkanika National Park, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Sundarban region.
