If you’re a central government employee and have been troubled by the various discussions surrounding the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) or reports of its closure, there’s some useful and comforting news for you. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has made it absolutely clear in the Lok Sabha that the government has no intention of changing the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) or introducing a new scheme in its place. This simply means that for the time being, the UPS will continue as strong as before.
How many employees have chosen UPS option so far?
If we understand every minute detail related to this scheme, then the Finance Minister has informed through a written reply in the Parliament that as of July 19, 2026, a total of 1,18,195 employees across the country have opted for UPS. This figure includes new recruits, current employees, as well as already retired employees. It should be noted that the Central Government launched this excellent scheme from April 1, 2025, as an alternative arrangement under the National Pension System (NPS). The main objective of this scheme is to provide a fixed monthly pension to employees after retirement and to protect their income from the rising impact of inflation.
What is the government’s plan and how does the plan work?
According to the government, the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) has been specifically designed for government employees who expect a fixed and guaranteed pension upon retirement. Furthermore, the scheme operates efficiently on a streamlined, contributory model without significantly burdening the country’s public finances. The Finance Minister also clarified in Parliament that since the scheme has been implemented only a short time ago, the government has not yet conducted a formal review of its functioning and performance.
Who will get the benefit of this scheme?
The benefits of the Unified Pension Scheme are not limited to existing employees. Employees who retire after completing at least 10 years of regular and continuous service under the National Pension System (NPS) by March 31, 2025, are also eligible to opt for this scheme. Furthermore, if such an eligible employee unfortunately dies, their legal spouse will also be fully entitled to the benefits of this excellent scheme.
Complete information from date extension to tax exemption
In response to continued demand from employees, the government extended the deadline for opting for UPS to November 30, 2025. Additionally, employees opting for this scheme receive gratuity benefits, CCS pension rules in the event of death or disability, and tax benefits similar to those of NPS. Furthermore, the government has provided a special facility to employees by allowing those opting for UPS to return to NPS for a one-time period. Overall, this major announcement by the government clearly indicates that there are no plans to make any changes to the UPS scheme at this time and it will continue in its entirety.
