At least 200 people with HIV, including 78 children! A terrible disaster in Pakistan due to the negligence of the hospital
Terrible disaster due to negligence of government hospital. Pakistan’s Karachi has become a hotspot for HIV. 78 children were infected with the deadly virus due to negligence alone. Besides, another 120 people have been identified as HIV positive by conducting screening in the area on an urgent basis. 6 deaths of IIV patients have been reported due to negligence alone. The health department of Pakistan is shaken as the incident comes to light.
It is known that this incident happened in a hospital in the site area of Karachi. Recently, a team of Sindh Health Care Commission came to visit the hospital. Health officials find that basic hospital infection prevention rules are not being followed. The investigation revealed that the hospital workers are repeatedly using single-use needles in the patient’s body. According to the rules, needles should be disposed of in a designated container after use. But here the workers were manually removing the needles from the syringes. They could not give any answer about where the needles are being disposed of. After the issue of negligence came to the fore, screening was started on an emergency basis in the area adjacent to the hospital. After collecting the blood samples of about 10,500 people, it was found that 78 children were infected with IAV, in addition, 120 people in the area were infected. 6 people died due to HIV infection.
After collecting the blood samples of about 10,500 people, it was found that 78 children were infected with IAV, in addition, 120 people in the area were infected.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah ordered strict action after this terrible information came to light. Thirty-seven officials and employees, including hospital administrators, lab workers and nursing staff, have been fired. According to the investigating team, an ‘infection control committee’ was set up in the hospital, but the committee failed completely due to laxity among the staff and negligence of safety rules. As a result, many people are infected with HIV together.
However, this is not the first time such an HIV outbreak has occurred in Pakistan’s Sindh province. In 2019, a similar incident took place in Sindh’s Ratodero area. Hundreds of children are infected with HIV as a result of injecting drug use and incorrect medical practices. Pakistan again witnessed the same incident.
