Preparation for important elections in Delhi Municipal Corporation, notification issued for formation of standing committee.
After the election of the members of the Standing Committee of Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD), now the first meeting of the committee has been called on July 27. In this meeting, the process of election of Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee will be completed. According to the provisions of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act (DMC Act), it is mandatory to elect the Chairman and Deputy Chairman in the first meeting held after the election of the Standing Committee members. Under this rule, the agenda of the meeting of July 27 has been decided.
The Corporation Secretary’s Office has issued an official notification regarding the formation of the Standing Committee and the election of its office bearers. According to the released notification, the last date for filing nominations for the post of Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee has been fixed as July 21. After this, elections for both the posts will be held in the first meeting to be held on July 27. As per the provisions of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act (DMC Act), it is mandatory to elect the Chairman and Deputy Chairman in the first meeting held after the election of the Standing Committee members.
9 members of the standing committee retired in March
There was a major change in the Standing Committee of MCD on 31 March 2026. After completion of the stipulated tenure, 9 members of the 18-member Standing Committee had retired, leaving half the seats of the committee vacant. Of the retiring members, 6 members were elected from zonal committees, while 3 members were elected from the House. After the tenure of these members ended, the process of filling the vacant posts of the Standing Committee was started. Under this, with the formation of zonal committees on July 15, 2026, the election of new members on all the 9 vacant seats of the Standing Committee was completed. After this, the formation of the Standing Committee has now been completed.
Currently, the 18-member Standing Committee has 12 members from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and 6 from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). This time, BJP’s strength in the Standing Committee has increased by one member, due to which its majority in the committee has become stronger. In such a situation, BJP is considered to have the upper hand in the upcoming Chairman and Deputy Chairman elections. According to the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act (DMC Act), in the first meeting held after the completion of the formation of all the members of the Standing Committee, the members of the committee elect the Chairman and Deputy Chairman from among themselves. Under this provision, voting for both the posts will be held in the first meeting to be held on July 27. Before this, the Corporation Secretary’s office has issued the election notification. Nominations for the post of Chairman and Deputy Chairman will be filed till July 21. After this, in the first meeting the elected members will choose their leader for both the posts.
In MCD, BJP has achieved great success in the elections of ward committees and standing committee. The party has made a strong lead in corporation politics by winning the post of president of 10 out of 12 ward committees. Apart from this, BJP also won 5 out of the six vacant seats of the Standing Committee, further strengthening its majority in the committee.
At the same time, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has won the post of president of two ward committees and one seat of the standing committee. After these results, there are 12 members of BJP and 6 members of Aam Aadmi Party in the 18-member Standing Committee. In such a situation, BJP is considered to have the upper hand in the election of Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee to be held on July 27.
