However, in this film, actor Deep Roy single-handedly created history by portraying 165 different characters, a feat considered extremely difficult to replicate.
Deep Roy played the diminutive Oompa Loompas in the film. These characters played a significant role in the film’s story, and director Tim Burton wanted all the characters to look alike but have distinct body language and mannerisms. Finding so many actors who looked identical was nearly impossible, so Deep Roy shouldered this responsibility.
This task was actually much more difficult than it sounds. For each scene, Deep Roy had to perform different expressions, moves, dance steps, and acting skills. To show multiple Oompa Loompas in a single frame, they were shot repeatedly, and then, using modern visual effects, all the shots were combined to create a single scene. This is why the audience feels as if dozens of actors are present on screen simultaneously, even though in reality, each character was played by Deep Roy.
The film’s most famous scene, the massive chocolate river, made headlines worldwide upon its release. To create this scene’s realistic and captivating effect, the makers used approximately 1.25 million liters of chocolate mixture. This scene was extremely popular with both children and adults and remains one of the film’s most memorable moments. Due to its set design and visual effects, it is still considered one of Hollywood’s finest cinematic experiments.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is certainly an entertaining fantasy film for children, but its story also contains many social messages, such as hard work, honesty, greed, and good behavior. This is why this film wasn’t just limited to children, but was loved by audiences of all ages. Superb acting, impressive sets, and excellent technology earned it the status of a classic.
