Former India pacer Zaheer Khan has become the co-owner of the Jaffna franchise in the Lanka Premier League (LPL). Stockholm-based global sports ownership group Anchor Sports AB has also invested in the team.
The franchise was known as Jaffna Kings before welcoming the new owners, but it has now been rebranded as Anchor Jaffna Kings, entering the new phase.
Anchor Sports owner Nagendra Siddoutam, along with Zaheer Khan, has come on board as the group continues to invest in cricket.
Anchor Sports has already bought the Antwerp Anchors in the European T20 Premier League and men’s and women’s franchises of Vancouver in Canada’s Super 60 League. The team has been named the Vancouver Anchors. Jaffna’s accusation is their latest expansion.
Anchor Jaffna Kings are currently second in the ongoing campaign in the LPL. They are the most successful franchise in the tournament’s history, winning four titles in six years.
Anil Mohan, who holds the rights of the LPL, welcomed the new owners, saying the performance of the franchise is a benchmark for excellence in the tournament.
“We welcome Anchor Sports to the LPL as they bought the Jaffna franchise, which has a good team in the tournament, having won four championship titles so far. We are confident that the new owners will carry forward the legacy with a new vision and energy. It will also take the standard of the Lanka Premier League to new heights.
We are looking forward to a new chapter and wish the new owners success,” Mohan said.
Zaheer spoke about his long association with Sri Lankan cricket.
“I have fond memories of Sri Lanka as I have played over here and even visited the country. To be a part of cricket in Sri Lanka as an owner is something I am thrilled about, and I can’t wait to start my journey with Jaffna Anchors,” Zaheer said.
LPL Tournament Director Samantha Dodanwela welcomed the former India fast bowler, saying his experience will help the local players.
“Zaheer Khan’s addition as owner is good for the league. He can act as a mentor and give direction to the young Sri Lankan cricketers. We are excited to see the passing of the experience on and off the field,” Dodanwela said.
