The statement came at a time when a parliamentary committee has asked Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to tender an “unconditional apology” within three days for temporarily blocking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s post on Facebook.
If Meta fails to do so within the stipulated timeframe, its “safe harbor protection” in India may be lost.
A high-level delegation from META met with IT Secretary S. Krishnan in the capital to discuss the issue of the wrongful removal of the Prime Minister’s video. They were also scheduled to meet with Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav.
Officials stressed the need to strictly enforce existing regulations and expressed concern over alleged misuse of the platform, including the arbitrary removal of the Prime Minister’s posts. They said such cases needed to be resolved immediately.
According to preliminary information, representatives from Meta and other social media platforms said they already have strict internal rules and fact-checking systems in place. They also stated that their platforms are not allowed to be misused, either intentionally or knowingly.
According to sources, this was the first round of the meeting and the next round is scheduled for Thursday.
Earlier, according to a letter sent to the Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the committee took the matter of the removal of the Prime Minister’s speech very seriously. The video, in which PM Modi addressed students and ‘Gen G’ about the government’s action on exam-related controversies and paper leaks, was reportedly unavailable on Facebook for approximately five to six hours.
