Hyderabad: Hyderabad has witnessed its largest-ever crackdown against food adulteration. The Hyderabad Food Adulteration Surveillance Team (H-FAST) and the GHMC’s Food Safety Department conducted a joint operation, raiding several spice dealers and processing units in the city. Approximately 25 tons of adulterated spices were seized, and three people were arrested and charged with various criminal offenses.
The operation was launched based on a tip-off
According to the police, complaints had been received for a long time that some traders were mixing harmful chemicals and industrial dyes into spices and selling them in the market. Based on these complaints, H-FAST and the Food Safety Department launched a joint investigation to curb the trade of adulterated foods and ensure public health.
Synthetic colors and clothing dyes found in spices
During the raids, 13 spice trading and processing units were inspected. The investigation revealed that ingredients such as synthetic food coloring, clothing dyes, industrial permanent dyes, talcum powder, and rice bran oil were being used to enhance the appearance and weight of spices. According to officials, several spices, including mustard, cumin, and cloves, were adulterated with these substances.
Risking customers’ health for profit
Investigating agencies say the purpose of adulteration was to enhance the spices’ color, increase their weight, and generate higher profits. These adulterated spices were being sold in the market to defraud consumers, even though consuming these chemicals can have serious health effects.

Three accused arrested, investigation underway
During the operation, police arrested three suspects and filed three separate criminal cases against them. Officials indicated that other individuals connected to this network are being identified and further action may be taken in the coming days.
