Weather Update: Heavy rain from UP to Jammu and Kashmir, know which states are most at risk

Weather Update 21 July: According to the latest forecast of India Meteorological Department (IMD), monsoon will be active in most parts of the country on July 21. Light to moderate rain is likely over many states in North, East, Central and South India with heavy to very heavy rainfall at some places. The Meteorological Department has appealed to the people to remain alert regarding incidents like waterlogging, landslides, flash floods and lightning strikes.

Heavy rain in East India and Northeast

Heavy rains are expected to continue in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha and North-Eastern states on Monday. There may also be heavy rain and thundershowers at many places in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Warning of extremely heavy rainfall has been issued in some areas.

Monsoon will remain active in North India also

There is a possibility of rain in many parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. There will be a risk of landslides and road blockage due to heavy to very heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. There may be a drop in temperature in Delhi-NCR due to cloudy sky throughout the day, light to moderate rain and strong winds.

Red alert in 12 districts of UP

IMD has issued a red alert of extremely heavy rain for 12 districts of Uttar Pradesh including Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Kasganj, Etah, Rampur, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Sambhal and Badaun.

According to the Meteorological Department, due to strong monsoon winds coming from the Bay of Bengal, rain will continue in the state for the next few days. Yellow alert has also been issued for parts of southern Uttar Pradesh from July 21 to 25.

Rain in central and western India also

Monsoon will also be active in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa. There is a possibility of heavy rain in many areas of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, while heavy rain may continue in Goa and Western Ghats areas. Farmers have been advised to maintain drainage system in the fields.

Light to moderate rain is expected in Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Lakshadweep. Parts of Kerala and Coastal Karnataka may receive heavy rainfall, while Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are likely to receive thundershowers.

Situation serious due to rain in Jammu and Kashmir

Due to continuous heavy rains and landslides in Jammu and Kashmir, the death toll in the last two days has increased to 16, while 7 people are still reported missing. Relief and rescue operations are continuing in Poonch and Rajouri districts, however, the operations are being affected due to bad weather.

The Meteorological Department has forecast moderate to heavy rain in many parts of Jammu and Kashmir till July 23 and has appealed to people to stay away from rivers, drains and landslide-prone areas. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has instructed the administration to speed up relief and rescue operations.
