SRK is not the ‘last superstar’? Annu Kapoor started a new debate, asked, ‘Will we remain relevant even in 2045?’

Annu Kapoor on Shah Rukh KhanYou must remember that famous statement of Bollywood’s king Shahrukh Khan, “I am modest, but to tell the truth, I am the last of the stars.” SRK’s fans and many people from the industry also agree with this. But senior actor Annu Kapoor does not accept this ‘last superstar’ tag at all. In a recent interview, he spoke openly on this claim of Shahrukh. Presented a completely different perspective regarding stardom.

“Will SRK remain equally relevant in 2045?”.

In a conversation with ‘Hindi Rush’, Annu Kapoor said that the media has always been making such stories. “Every year the media creates an atmosphere that a particular person is the ‘last superstar’. Similar things were said during Rajesh Khanna’s time also. But if we look at it, no one has played long innings like Amitabh Bachchan, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. It is a very difficult task to keep oneself relevant for such a long career.” He explained a calculation without taking names. It is said that this actor started his career around 1992. It has been almost 34 years today. “Subtract 34 from Amitabh Bachchan’s career of 53 years. There are still 19 years left. Do you think Shah Rukh Khan will be as relevant for the next 19 years? Will he be as relevant in 2045? I don’t think so.” Yes, he definitely admitted that Shah Rukh is the second richest actor in the world. No one can take away this success from him.

What did you say about working together in the film ‘Darr’?

When Annu Kapoor was asked how was the experience of working with Shahrukh in Yash Chopra’s 1993 thriller film ‘Dar’? At first he said that he did not remember. Then when he remembered he said that those were the initial days of Shah Rukh. On the insistence of Yash Chopra, he shot for only 3 days. “I have nothing to do with Shahrukh Khan. And when I have nothing to do with anyone, I only have prayers and blessings for them.”

Humanity is greater than stardom

Even though Annu Kapoor may not agree with the tag of ‘Last Superstar’, he praised Shah Rukh’s personal life a lot. He said that he has heard that Shah Rukh is a very good father, husband and brother. According to Annu Kapoor, “Superstars come and go. But the person who takes care of his family and sister is his biggest achievement.”

Why did the ‘Last Superstar’ debate become a topic of discussion in Bollywood?

This statement of Annu Kapoor has come at a time when the meaning of stardom is changing rapidly in Bollywood. Due to the advent of OTT platforms and the changing preferences of the audience, no actor can now fill the theater alone for decades. When Shahrukh Khan called himself ‘Last of the Stars’, he was referring to this change. According to him, it is impossible for any new actor to get the kind of blind love and madness that the stars of the 90s got. But Annu Kapoor’s logic has brought a new twist to this debate. He believes that real stardom is not decided only by popularity or box office collection, but by how much you are able to change yourself with time. Will the audience want to see an actor with the same enthusiasm in the coming 15-20 years? It will be interesting to see how Shahrukh Khan’s fans or SRK himself react to this frank statement of Annu Kapoor.
