With the approach of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the politics of Muslim votes appears to be taking a new turn. While the Samajwadi Party and Congress have yet to finalize a potential alliance and seat-sharing formula, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has begun efforts to gain an edge in the electoral arena. Owaisi has been holding rallies in Muslim-majority districts, expanding his organization, and has already begun announcing candidates.
He delivered his biggest message from the Matera constituency in Bahraich, where he formally launched the election campaign by announcing state president Shaukat Ali as the party’s first candidate. Political experts believe that Owaisi’s goal is not just to win seats, but to establish himself as a decisive force in constituencies where Muslim voters constitute 25 to 40 percent of the population. Even if AIMIM makes a limited dent in the Muslim vote, it could directly impact the electoral equations of the Samajwadi Party and Congress. At the same time, the BJP’s chances of benefiting from a triangular contest could also increase.
Indication of Preparations to Contest 200 Seats
MP Owaisi launched the Uttar Pradesh election campaign in June from the Matera Assembly constituency in Bahraich. From this very platform, he announced state president Shaukat Ali as the party’s candidate for the Matera seat, clearly signaling that AIMIM is not just contesting elections this time, but also fighting a long-term political battle based on its organizational strength. The party has also indicated its readiness to contest approximately 200 seats, while maintaining open alliance options.
Public Meetings in Western UP, Focus on the Muslim Belt
Following Bahraich, the party has focused its attention on Western Uttar Pradesh. Public awareness meetings have been organized in Najibabad (Bijnor), Saharanpur, and Moradabad, while organizational teams are continuously active in Rampur, Sambhal, Amroha, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, and Moradabad. The party is also eyeing Muslim-dominated districts like Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Siddharthnagar, Azamgarh, Mau, and Ghazipur.
A Direct Eye on the SP’s Traditional Vote Bank
Owaisi’s speeches focus primarily on political representation, the Constitution, reservation, education, and Muslim leadership. These are the same issues that have helped the Samajwadi Party win the trust of Muslim voters for years. AIMIM is trying to attract young Muslim voters and first-time voters.
Why was there no success in 2022?
In the 2022 assembly elections, AIMIM fielded candidates in nearly 100 seats, but failed to win a single seat. Their deposits were forfeited in most of the seats. According to political analysts, this was largely due to Muslim voters strategically voting for the Samajwadi Party to defeat the BJP and AIMIM’s weak booth organization.
This time, the party hasn’t become active only during the elections. Forming booth committees, expanding the organization at the district level, bringing local leadership to the forefront, and holding frequent public meetings are all part of AIMIM’s new strategy. Owaisi has also indicated that an alliance on respectable terms is not ruled out to stop the BJP.
Will the 2027 electoral equations change?
Muslim voters play a significant role in over 100 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. In many of these seats, the margin of victory and defeat is very narrow. Therefore, if AIMIM manages to garner even 3 to 5 percent of the vote, it could lead to a triangular contest in many seats. This could have the greatest impact on the alliance between the Samajwadi Party and the Congress.
On the other hand, it is also true that if strategic voting against the BJP emerges at election time, a large portion of Muslim voters could also side with a strong opposition party. Therefore, Owaisi’s electoral activism is currently a topic of discussion in political circles, but its actual impact will depend on the candidates, alliances, and local equations.
