Solar Generation Records Massive Growth
India’s solar power generation has grown by an impressive 138% over the last four years, increasing from 73.48 billion units (BU) in FY22 to 174.76 billion units in FY26, according to data shared by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
The sharp rise reflects India’s rapid expansion of solar capacity and the increasing contribution of renewable energy to the country’s electricity generation, making solar one of the fastest-growing sources of power.
Solar’s Share In Electricity Generation Nearly Doubles
The growth has significantly increased solar energy’s contribution to India’s overall electricity production. Solar’s share in total electricity generation has risen from 4.95% in FY22 to 9.50% in FY26, highlighting its growing role in meeting the country’s rising energy demand.
The momentum has continued into the current financial year as well. Between April and June FY27, India generated 62.79 billion units of solar electricity, accounting for 12.03% of the country’s total power generation of 521.82 billion units during the period.
Renewable Energy Continues To Expand
Renewable energy is becoming an increasingly important part of India’s electricity mix. During the April-June period of FY27, renewable sources generated 137.81 billion units, contributing 26.41% of the country’s total electricity output.
As of June 2026, renewable energy accounted for 52.6% of India’s installed power generation capacity, although its share in actual electricity generation remained around 26% due to the intermittent nature of solar and wind energy.
Why Renewable Generation Is Lower Than Installed Capacity
The government explained that while renewable energy represents more than half of India’s installed capacity, actual electricity generation is lower because solar and wind projects depend on weather conditions.
Unlike thermal power plants that can operate continuously, renewable sources have lower capacity utilisation factors, resulting in lower electricity output despite significant installed capacity.
Strong Momentum Towards Clean Energy
India’s rapid growth in solar generation reflects continued investments in renewable energy infrastructure and the country’s long-term commitment to cleaner power sources. As more solar projects come online and grid infrastructure improves, solar energy is expected to play an even bigger role in meeting future electricity demand while reducing dependence on conventional fuels.
