Honeymoon Murder Case: SC Cancels Sonam Raghuvanshi’s Bail, Orders Surrender Within 3 Weeks

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed Sonam Raghuvanshi, an accused in the high-profile honeymoon murder case, to surrender before the trial court within three weeks.

The order marks a major setback for Sonam, whose bail had been challenged by the Meghalaya government. The apex court also said she would be free to approach the court again for bail if the trial was not completed within six months.

Court Raises Questions Over Bail Order

During an earlier hearing, the Supreme Court bench had expressed reservations about the grounds on which Sonam was granted bail by the lower courts.

The bench had given her the option of either contesting the bail matter on its merits or surrendering temporarily while important prosecution witnesses were examined.

The court indicated that surrendering during the recording of crucial evidence could help prevent any possible influence on witnesses.

Fresh Bail Plea Possible After Witness Examination

The court reportedly indicated that the trial court could first record the statements of public and other key witnesses before considering Sonam’s bail application.

It also provided a safeguard against an indefinite trial by allowing her to seek bail again if proceedings were not concluded within six months.

Meghalaya Government Challenged Bail

The Meghalaya government approached the Supreme Court against the order granting bail to Sonam.

The prosecution argued that a clerical mistake in the arrest documents could not become the basis for releasing her. Section 403 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was allegedly mentioned instead of Section 103, which deals with murder.

According to the prosecution, Sonam was fully aware of the allegations and reasons for her arrest despite the typographical error.

What Is the Honeymoon Murder Case?

Sonam is accused of conspiring to murder her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya in May 2025. The couple was initially reported missing. Raja’s body was later recovered from a gorge near Weisawdong Falls, while Sonam was traced several days later in Uttar Pradesh.

Investigators subsequently named Sonam and her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha, as principal accused in the alleged murder conspiracy. The allegations against them are yet to be established through a completed trial.
