Patna: A tragic road accident in Patna, the capital of Bihar, on Friday sparked public outrage that turned the entire area into a battlefield. A speeding bus, out of control, crushed 26-year-old Manish Kumar, who was crossing the road near a hill in the Agamkuan police station area of Patna City. Manish died on the spot. The driver fled the vehicle immediately after the accident, and the passengers on board escaped unhurt. However, the incident sparked outrage among the deceased’s family and local residents. This anger quickly escalated into a violent mob, wreaking havoc throughout the area.
Firefighters and police were chased away.
The enraged mob first surrounded the bus that caused the accident and set it on fire. The blazing flames of the bus created panic. Upon receiving information about the accident, when the fire brigade team arrived at the scene to extinguish the fire, the angry mob pelted them with stones, forcing the firefighters to return without taking any action.
Attack on Media Personnel
Motorcycles belonging to several civilians and journalists parked at the scene were targeted and set on fire. The mob also scuffled with and attacked media personnel who had come to cover the incident. A journalist from a major news channel even had his microphone ID snatched.
Heavy Police Deployment
Upon receiving information about the incident, police forces from several police stations and senior administrative officials arrived at the scene to assess the severity of the situation. Police had to use mild force to disperse the unruly crowd and restore peace in the area. Giving information on the incident, ASP Raj Kumar Singh stated that a young man named Manish Kumar was hit by a bus while crossing the road and died, after which some miscreants took advantage of the crowd and instigated violence. The angry rioters set fire to three police jeeps present at the scene, completely destroying them.
Several vehicles, including police vehicles, were set ablaze.
Additional police forces have been deployed to the area, the body has been taken into custody and sent for post-mortem examination, and the situation is now completely under control. The police team also faced heavy opposition. The crowd had become unruly. Police personnel had to retreat from the scene to save their lives.
