Railway plans proposed in the country are approx. 7,000 kilometers The aim is to develop a control system for the long high-speed rail network, which will be designed according to Indian conditions and needs. This is expected to significantly reduce the dependence on foreign technology in future bullet train projects.

According to railway officials, BTCS will be developed on open-source technology. This will keep its cost relatively low and allow it to be easily adapted to the needs of different high-speed rail corridors. There is also a possibility of making this technology available to other countries in future.

Experience will be gained from Mumbai-Ahmedabad project

The experience gained from the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed ​​Rail (MAHSR) project will be used in the development of this indigenous system. Currently, European Train Control System (ETCS) Level-2 is being installed in this project, which is considered capable of safe operation of trains at speeds up to 350 kilometers per hour.

Last year, the National High Speed ​​Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) had awarded a contract worth about Rs 4,100 crore for the signaling work of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project to a consortium of India’s Dineshchandra R Aggarwal Infracon and Germany’s Siemens.

Railway officials say the design and route plans of the country’s new bullet train corridors are likely to get final approval by mid-2027. After this, the process of expansion of the high-speed rail network is expected to accelerate further.

Indian companies will get a big opportunity

The development of BTCS will provide an opportunity to Indian industries to develop signaling systems, control equipment and other technical solutions for high-speed rail. This will boost domestic manufacturing and also strengthen India’s technological capability.

Discussion continues on Japanese technology also

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project is being built in collaboration with Japan. However, it has adopted ETCS Level-2 signaling technology instead of Japan’s Digital Automatic Train Control System. Recently, former Japanese Minister Hideki Makihara had also raised questions regarding this decision. Railway officials say that the trains of Japanese company Hitachi are fully compatible with ETCS technology. If Japanese companies make suitable proposals in future, India can also consider Japanese signaling protocol.

Indian Railways aims not only to run bullet trains but also to become self-reliant in important technologies related to it.
