Sonam Wangchuk Demands Accepted: The central government has finally taken note of the hunger strike and agitation of Ladakh’s famous social worker and educationist Sonam Wangchuk. Union Minister J. P. Nadda and Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh went to the hospital and met Sonam Wangchuk. During this visit J. P. Nadda read out the official letter of assurance from the central government and informed about the conditions accepted by the government.

Social activist Sonam Wangchuk has reacted amid the ongoing agitation over the NEET paper leak issue. “Discussions were going on continuously with the government for the last two days and we were not ready to give up the fast on mere verbal assurances. The government withdrew the hunger strike only after giving written assurances on the major demands. We wanted concrete and written assurances. So the talks took two more days and I had to fast for two more days. The government has given written assurances agreeing to our major demands.”

After calling off the fast, Wangchuck thanked the support received from across the country. “Getting these three concrete and important promises for the welfare of the students is a major achievement of the movement rather than risking their lives to continue the hunger strike. He also appealed to all the supporters to maintain peace and not allow any violence in the name of the movement.

Prime Minister Modi’s video message

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a video message late on Wednesday night expressing the government’s intention to introduce a new and tougher law to curb paper leakage and punish the guilty. The draft law will be discussed in the Union Cabinet meeting on Thursday, after approval it will be tabled in Parliament next week and efforts will be made to pass it as soon as possible, he said.
