Maharashtra government has announced big relief for the students studying MBBS. The government has abolished the service bond which makes it mandatory to work in a government hospital for one year after MBBS. This decision will benefit thousands of medical students and new doctors of the state.
Now the students who have completed MBBS studies. Students who have not yet been sent to work in a government hospital will not have to do the mandatory job for one year. Earlier, students had to work in a government hospital after completing their studies. If someone did not do this, he had to pay a fine.
Why was this rule repealed?
Maharashtra government has given many reasons behind abolishing this rule. The government order issued on July 23 stated that the number of medical colleges and MBBS seats in the state has increased significantly in the last few years. Due to this, every year more doctors are completing their studies than before. But there are not that many posts available for bond service in government hospitals.

In such a situation, many doctors had to wait for appointments for a long time. This caused delay in starting their further studies, job and career. In view of this problem, the government decided to end the system of one year compulsory service bond.
Health department recommends abolition
This policy was reviewed in a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister on July 9, 2025. After the meeting, the Public Health Department suggested that the system of one year compulsory service bond be abolished. This recommendation has now also been approved by the Medical Education Department. After this the government decided to abolish this rule for MBBS students.
What will be the benefit to the students?
MBBS students will get many benefits by removing the requirement of one year service bond. Now they will not have to do compulsory work in a government hospital for one year. With this, they will be able to prepare for PG (MD/MS) studies or start the job of their choice without waiting. Students will not have to wait long for bond posting. If they do not want to do government service, they will not have to pay any penalty for breaking the bond. This will save their time and they will be able to start their career quickly.

What did MARD say?
Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has welcomed this decision of the government. MARD says that this will give young doctors an opportunity to pursue PG studies and career without any delay. Making changes to this important reform, Central MARD appealed to the government to now focus on strengthening the health care infrastructure of the state instead of just increasing the number of MBBS seats.
