Amid the ongoing heavy rainfall across the country, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has once again issued a severe weather warning. According to the department’s forecast, heavy rain, thunderstorms, and severe weather conditions are expected in 16 states, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, on August 8th.
New Delhi: The monsoon has resumed activity in India, and the Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall, strong thunderstorms, and lightning in many parts of the country for August 8. According to the latest forecast, severe weather is expected in at least 16 states across northern, eastern, central, and western India. Strong winds of up to 75 kilometers per hour are expected in some areas, increasing the risk of disruption to normal life.
Weather experts say that a developing low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal and a cyclonic circulation over northern India are expected to bring widespread rainfall activity. This could lead to flooding, waterlogging, landslides, and traffic disruptions in several states.
In which states was the alert issued?
The weather department has issued an alert for heavy rain and strong winds for 16 states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Kerala. Landslides and road blockages are especially expected in hilly states.
Meanwhile, lightning strikes may increase in many parts of eastern India. Farmers, fishermen, and people living near riverbanks have been advised to exercise extra caution.
Weather impact in Delhi and North India
Heavy rain and strong winds are expected in the national capital, Delhi, on August 8. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 33 degrees Celsius, and the minimum temperature is expected to be around 28 degrees Celsius. Heavy rain may disrupt traffic and cause waterlogging in low-lying areas. Widespread rainfall is also expected in western, central, and eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh.
Meerut, Noida, Agra, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, and other districts may experience rain accompanied by strong winds. Wind speeds could reach 50 to 55 kilometers per hour in many places.
Heavy rain likely in Bihar and Jharkhand
A stormy weather warning has been issued for several districts in Bihar, including heavy rain and thunderstorms. The northern and eastern parts of the state, including Patna, are at increased risk of waterlogging and localized flooding. In Jharkhand, heavy rainfall is expected in Ranchi, Bokaro, Jamshedpur, Dumka, and surrounding areas. Winds of up to 50 to 60 kilometers per hour are expected, disrupting power supply and traffic.
Increased concern in hill states
Amid the continuous rainfall in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, the new alert could increase the administration’s concerns. Moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast in Dehradun, Nainital, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh. Landslides are also expected in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Kangra, and Chamba districts.
Heavy rain and strong winds are also forecast for many areas of Jammu and Kashmir. Travelers in sensitive mountainous areas are advised to monitor weather updates regularly.
Rajasthan and western India also affected
Heavy rain and strong thunderstorms are expected in several districts of Rajasthan, including Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota, Alwar, Sikar, and Jhunjhunu. Wind speeds could reach 65 kilometers per hour in some areas. Monsoon activity is also expected to remain strong in many parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra, while Kerala may experience continuous rainfall.
