Volkswagen Sheep Grass Cutting: Have you ever thought that Volkswagen, one of the world’s leading automobile companies, is employing sheep instead of machines to cut grass in its hi-tech factory. Though it sounds like a joke, but by doing so the company has attracted the attention of the entire world. Let us tell you that with the aim of environmental protection, reduction in carbon emissions and operation cost, Volkswagen has deployed a special force of 100 sheep in its huge solar plant. But this initiative is not just limited to cutting grass, but a big scientific experiment is also hidden behind it.
A unique experiment has begun at a solar farm in Poland.
This unique project is underway at the Volkswagen plant in Poznan, Poland, where the company manufactures its electric commercial van, the e-Crafter. It’s reported that more than 31,000 solar panels have been installed to meet the factory’s electricity needs. Instead of machines, sheep are now responsible for controlling the grass growing beneath these panels.
What is Agrivoltaics technology?
This model is called Agrivoltaics. It means that the same land is used for two purposes: on one hand, production of solar energy and on the other hand, farming or animal husbandry. This model is considered beneficial for the environment as well as making better use of the land. In addition, this 18.3 MW solar plant, developed by Berlin-based green firm Quanta Energy, meets approximately 25% of the factory’s annual electricity needs. In summer, this plant alone is sometimes capable of providing 100% of the factory’s electricity.
The victory of nature, the holiday of machines
It has been shown that natural grazing by sheep eliminates the need for diesel or petrol-powered mowing machines. This not only reduces maintenance costs but also significantly reduces carbon emissions. Furthermore, there is no risk of solar panels being damaged by flying stones or debris from the machines.
Sheep are not only eating grass but also doing scientific research.
Volkswagen has partnered with scientists from the Poznan University of Life Sciences for this project. Researchers are investigating whether the shade of solar panels provides relief from the intense heat for the sheep. What positive effects is the sheep’s presence having on the soil and vegetation? And is this setup creating a new ecosystem for local insects and wildlife? Furthermore, according to Justyna Nowak-Gajek, the sheep’s owner, the sheep are completely comfortable in this industrial environment and are grazing comfortably in separate groups.
Moreover, according to Marzena Pilich-Gronska, Director, Volkswagen Poznan, “Today, this solar farm not only provides green electricity, but has also become a hub for biodiversity, local agriculture, and scientific research. This sheep project proves that modern industry and nature can work together.” This initiative shows that the industry of the future is not just focused on technology, but also on sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions.
