CJI Surya Kant said – Media is spreading this wrong news without caring about all its responsibilities.
New Delhi. CJI Surya Kant on Friday termed as irresponsible media reports that he refused to hear immediately the petition challenging the police action against the students on July 20.
The Chief Justice clarified that no petition was filed but only a letter was given. He said, in the last two days, it was completely falsely claimed that a petition was filed and the media, oblivious of all its responsibilities, is spreading the false news that the Chief Justice refused to list the case.
The Chief Justice said, till 10 am today, no petition was filed (in this regard). There was only one letter…which was sent by Mishra (a person named) or some other person. How can I treat a letter as a writ petition? But people are spreading news about this irresponsibly.
what happened on 20th july
He made this comment on Friday when lawyers were mentioning their cases for urgent hearing. On Wednesday, a lawyer had requested for an urgent hearing in the case of police action against students during the protest march led by Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) here on July 20. The lawyer had said, I have videos of alleged police brutality. Can it be listed for tomorrow (Thursday)… students are there (protesting).”
He had claimed that the police brutalized the students during the demonstration. On this, the Chief Justice did not accept the request for urgent hearing and clarified that the bench was not willing to see the video footage only at the stage of mention of the case. He had said, we are not interested in the video. We don’t have time to watch videos… We don’t want to watch any videos.
When the lawyer again said that there was lathicharge on the students and referred to the video evidence, the Chief Justice had said, “Don’t waste our time.” We don’t want to see any video.” However, even at that time no formal petition was filed.
Police had lathicharged the students
There were clashes between protesters and security forces during a march led by CJP on July 20. The police resorted to lathicharge and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd trying to move towards Parliament. The protesters are demanding the resignation of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) question paper leak issue.
