Para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar created history, gave India its first medal in Commonwealth Games 2026.

Bihar’s Jhandu Kumar has created history in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. On the second day of Commonwealth Games 2026, Jhandu Kumar won the bronze medal in Para Powerlifting. This is the first medal for India in Para Power Lifting and it is also the first international medal for Jhandu Kumar. His journey to reach here after overcoming many struggles in life is no less than an inspiring story.

Jhandu Kumar’s father does farming

Let us tell you that Riluwan Idris of Nigeria failed to lift the weight of 212 kg in his last attempt and at the same moment this medal went to Zandu Kumar of Bihar. Jhandu Kumar is a member of a farmer family. His father does farming and sometimes also sells vegetables to meet the household expenses.

Despite this, Jhandu Kumar did not let his dream break and continued to work hard. Today the entire country along with his family is feeling proud of Jhandu Kumar.

First medal for India

Jhandu Kumar has won the first medal for India in Para Powerlifter. Zandu won the bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight category. He achieved 130.9 points with successful lifts of 181 and 190 kg. His last attempt of 196 kg was not successful. Idris Riluwan of Nigeria won the gold medal in this event. Matthew Harding won the silver medal.
