Whispers about new alliances have once again intensified in Maharashtra’s political circles. The reason is the decision of all eight Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) MPs to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to the party’s Lok Sabha group leader, Supriya Sule, all eight MPs from the Sharad Pawar faction will meet Prime Minister Modi on Monday, August 10, at 11 am in Delhi.
Many political implications are being drawn from this meeting in political circles. Since the recent rebellion within the Uddhav Thackeray faction, rumors of a split within Sharad Pawar’s party have surfaced. Therefore, the fact that MPs from a key opposition coalition partner directly sought time with the Prime Minister is no coincidence. However, Supriya Sule dismissed any political speculation, describing it as a purely courtesy meeting related to development work.
Support for the Delimitation Bill or just parliamentary courtesy?
In fact, political temperatures are already high over the delimitation and FCRA amendment bills being introduced by the central government. Sources claim that Sharad Pawar’s party may support the delimitation bill if the government proposes to increase the number of seats in the country by 50 percent. The all-party meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah also provided positive signals in this direction, with several major opposition parties expressing agreement in principle.
However, Supriya Sule’s stance on this issue is very measured. She says that the NDA has neither sought support for the delimitation bill nor has any formal discussion taken place. As for the FCRA bill, the Pawar faction will strongly oppose it and insist on referring it to the JPC (Joint Parliamentary Committee).
Supriya Sule issues clarification amid reports of rebellion
The recent past has been tumultuous for the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), the opposition coalition in Maharashtra. Following the joining of six MPs from Uddhav Thackeray’s party to the Eknath Shinde faction, reports of defections by MLAs and MPs from the Pawar faction have also dominated media headlines. In such a context, it’s natural to view the meeting with PM Modi through a political lens.
Supriya Sule strongly objected to this, saying, “The Prime Minister holds the highest constitutional position in the country, and it is everyone’s duty to respect him. When the government invited NDA MPs to breakfast, we were not asked. Now, we ourselves are going to meet the Prime Minister to discuss public issues and development projects in our constituencies. When we are meeting publicly in broad daylight, it is absolutely not right to make baseless speculations.”
It will be interesting to see in the coming days whether this meeting in Delhi remains limited only to the development issues of Maharashtra or through this a new chapter is written in the politics of the state.
