Sarnath, the holy place of Buddha, got the status of world heritage, know why this is a proud moment for India.

Sarnath UNESCO World Heritage List: Sarnath, the first preaching place of Lord Buddha in Varanasi, has created history. After a long and arduous wait of about 28 years, Sarnath has been formally included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. As soon as the news of this achievement came, there was a wave of happiness in the entire country including Kashi. The final approval to include Sarnath in this list was given in the 48th World Heritage Committee meeting of UNESCO held in Busan city of South Korea.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep enthusiasm on this historic occasion. He said that Sarnath has a very deep connection with the life and teachings of Lord Buddha. His message of knowledge, compassion and harmony continues to guide the entire world even today. The Prime Minister described it as a moment of immense pride for India’s rich cultural heritage.

28 years long and historic struggle

The journey to include Sarnath in the UNESCO list has not been easy. For the first time in the year 1998, Sarnath got a place in the tentative list of UNESCO. Since then, continuous efforts were being made to give it permanent status. However, the matter remained stuck in the initial phase due to some technical shortcomings and incomplete preparation of paper documents.

At the end of the year 2024, fresh serious efforts were started in this direction. The Ministry of Culture of the Government of India, the Archaeological Survey of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh together completed all the necessary formalities expeditiously. After this, in October 2025, a special team of the International Council on Monuments and Sites conducted an in-depth survey of Sarnath for three days. Necessary documents and dossiers had already been prepared. After evaluating the report, in January and February, this organization recommended inclusion of Sarnath in the heritage list.

What strict standards did Sarnath live up to?

UNESCO sets 10 tough standards for including any site in its World Heritage List. According to the experts of Varanasi, Sarnath has successfully fulfilled the two most important parameters. The first standard is to provide extraordinary testimony to a cultural tradition, living or extinct. Sarnath has been a unique and vibrant center of Buddhist culture, art and ancient tradition.

The second major criterion is direct connection with historical and religious traditions. Buddhist followers and devotees from all over the world want to come to Sarnath at least once in their life and pay homage. This spiritual connection and historical importance makes Sarnath different from other places in the world. On these two strong grounds, UNESCO gave it a place in its list.

Tourism and employment will get a new dimension

Sarnath getting the World Heritage status is going to bring huge economic and social benefits to the entire Varanasi and surrounding areas. Tourism experts believe that after this announcement, there will be a huge increase in the arrival of foreign tourists in Varanasi. There will be a big jump in the number of tourists coming especially from countries following Buddhism like Japan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan, America and European countries.

The increasing number of tourists will create new employment opportunities for the local hotel industry, travel agencies, handicraft artisans, guides and shopkeepers. With this, the branding of Sarnath will be further strengthened at the global level. The inclination of scholars interested in history and research will also increase towards Kashi.

New paths for future development

After being included in the UNESCO list, the development of the area around Sarnath will be done in a very systematic and according to green standards. In the coming days, better traffic management, heritage mobility scheme and construction of encroachment-free wide roads will gain momentum. Besides, to protect the environment of this area, green areas will also be expanded, so that this place can remain more safe for the coming generations.
