New Delhi: Due to deepening tension between America and Iran once again, the world’s most sensitive sea route i.e. ‘Strait of Hormuz’ has been closed. Know what is the price of petrol and diesel in your city today?

According to new data released today by petroleum companies, generally there has been no major change in fuel prices across the country, although slight fluctuations have been recorded in some selected cities due to local tax and VAT. If we look at today’s metro rates, petrol is being sold at Rs 102.12 per liter and diesel at Rs 95.20 per liter in the capital Delhi. Whereas in the financial capital Mumbai, the price of petrol is Rs 111.21 and the price of diesel is Rs 97.83 per liter. Apart from this, petrol in Kolkata has reached Rs 113.51 and diesel Rs 99.82 per liter. Local changes have also been seen in some cities, like in Jaipur petrol has become costlier by 50 paise and diesel by 47 paise and is being sold at Rs 113.19 and Rs 98.25 per liter respectively, while in Lucknow petrol has increased by 27 paise to Rs 101.86 and diesel by 30 paise to Rs 95.36 per litre.

Government made major changes in windfall tax on petrol and diesel

Meanwhile, a new notification has been issued by the Finance Ministry, under which major changes have been made in the windfall tax on fuel. The government has directly reduced the windfall tax on petrol from Rs 4 per liter to Rs 2 per litre. However, on the contrary, the tax on diesel has been increased, after which this duty has been increased from Rs 8.5 to Rs 15.5 per liter. Apart from this, windfall tax on Aviation Turbine Fuel i.e. ATF has also been increased from Rs 7.5 to Rs 14.5 per liter. This step of the government will not have any direct impact on the retail market of the general public, that is, the prices of petrol and diesel available to the general public will remain the same.

Geopolitical tension and rise in crude oil up to 2 percent

The central government has made this important change in tax at a time when the global market seems quite unstable due to increasing tension in the Middle East. After Iran re-imposed its naval blockade, there is a serious crisis on the oil supply through the Strait of Hormuz, because about 20 percent of the world’s oil passes through this route. Apart from this, new geopolitical tensions and frequent attacks on oil tankers have also worked to push prices higher, although sluggish global demand and inflation concerns have kept this rise to some extent. Due to other supply constraints like low exports from Russia, the refining margin of diesel has also increased, due to which there is constant pressure on the international oil market.
