AMD EPYC: New SP7 and SP8 platforms, supposedly

The leak also hints AMD is working on two brand-new server platforms. Instead of sticking with the existing SP5 and SP6 sockets, Venice processors are said to move toward:

  • SP7 for the higher-end EPYC 9006 chips
  • SP8 for the more cost-focused server builds

Per the leaked roadmap, SP7 would be where the top-tier, highest-core-count parts go, while SP8 would be for systems that need less power draw and fewer cores overall. AMD hasn’t confirmed any of these socket changes, at least not yet.

Bigger chiplets and more cache

Then there’s the part about AMD redesigning its Core Complex Dies (CCDs) for Zen 6. The standard Zen 6 CCD is rumored to land with:

  • 12 CPU cores per CCD
  • 48MB of L3 cache per CCD

Meanwhile, the Zen 6c versions, at least according to the report, could include:

  • 32 cores per CCD
  • 128MB of L3 cache per CCD

If these numbers end up being real, AMD would likely push core density much higher while also widening the cache footprint for enterprise use. And the most extreme 256-core option is rumored to reach something like 1GB total L3 cache, which is a lot, to say the least.
