​Medical emergency revolution in India: Now help will reach from the sky, air ambulance and drones will beat the traffic

Technology Desk, New Delhi/Chennai: The Emergency Healthcare System in India is going to enter a new and historic phase. It is often seen that due to heavy traffic jams and remote areas in the country, serious patients do not get proper treatment on time. But this situation is going to change soon.

An important agreement has been signed between IIT Madras-affiliated aerospace startup ‘The ePlane Company’ and the country’s leading private hospital group Apollo Hospitals. Under this partnership, the service of electric air ambulance (eVTOL) and medical delivery drones will be started in India.

Traffic hassle ends: treatment will reach 7 times faster

The most important thing about this initiative is that the speed of taking patients to hospitals will be seven times faster than before. The electric air ambulance named e200X, being developed by E-Plane Company, will transport patients directly to the trauma center without getting stuck in heavy traffic.

This electric air ambulance will not only be much cheaper than traditional helicopter services, but will also be environment friendly and less noisy.

Thousands of lives will be saved in ‘Golden Hour’

According to health experts, in cases of an accident, heart attack or stroke, the first 1 hour is very sensitive, which is called the ‘Golden Hour’. According to statistics, in India, only 20 percent of patients in road accidents or emergencies reach the hospital on time. With this new aerial technology, patients can be shifted directly from accident sites or small centers to big specialist hospitals without any delay, which will save thousands of innocent lives every year in the country.

Organ and blood transplant will happen within minutes

​This technology will prove to be a milestone not only for transportation of patients but also for medical supplies. Through special medical drones of ‘Amber Wings’, a subsidiary of e-Plane:

Human Organs: Organs required for transplant can be sent from one hospital to another within minutes without creating green corridors.

​Emergency supplies: Delivery of blood bags, life-saving medicines, vaccines and critical pathology samples will be possible in seconds and minutes.

​Key features of technology and infrastructure

​The aircraft model used for this service is the e200X, which is an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This aircraft can fly at a speed of 160 km/hour and is capable of covering a distance of up to 110 km at a time. Its biggest feature is that it does not require any big runway for take-off and landing, it can easily land and take-off even on a small roof or space of just 8×10 meters. Talking about capacity, it can carry 1 pilot and 2 passengers or carry a payload (weight) of up to 200 kg. Additionally, an automated medical drone network will be operated by Amber Wings for delivery of medicines and essential samples.

Future preparations and regulatory approvals

​Apollo Hospitals and The E-Plane Company are working closely with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and relevant civil aviation authorities to bring this ambitious project to life. Under this, ‘Vertiports’ and electric charging infrastructure will be created in cities and major hospitals.

In the coming time, this technology will completely change the health infrastructure of India and it will become very easy for the citizens living in the most remote areas to get world class emergency care.)
