Commonwealth Games 2026: Rishikant Singh gives India its first silver medal
New Delhi: After opening India’s medal account in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, now its second medal has also arrived. Weightlifter Rishikant Singh Chanambam performed brilliantly in the men’s 60 kg category and won the silver medal for the country. With his victory, India’s total medal count in these games has increased to 2.
CWG record made in snatch
Rishikant’s performance in the final was memorable. In the snatch round, he created a new Commonwealth Games record by lifting 121 kg. This one lift alone put him ahead in the medal race. After this he had some trouble in clean and jerk.
He was successful in only one attempt out of three and could lift only 143 kg. Still, his total score including snatch and clean and jerk was 264 kg. On the basis of this score, he stood second on the podium and won the silver medal for India.
What did Rishikant Singh say after winning the medal?
After this achievement, he expressed his happiness and said that this medal is not just his, but of the entire country. Rishikant Singh said, "I have worked very hard to reach this point and am very happy to win the silver medal. This medal belongs to the whole of India. I sincerely thank the Government of India, Indian Weightlifting Federation, support staff and all my friends who supported me at every step."
He also gave credit for his success to his mentor and Indian team head coach Vijay Sharma. Rishikant said, "I would like to express my special gratitude to my mentor Vijay Sharma. I took training under his guidance only. He taught us how to perform and prepare for the competition. I had complete confidence in my training and my entire focus was on it."
Dedicating his silver medal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian weightlifter said that under his leadership, sports have been continuously promoted and players have received better facilities and support.
Shock for India in lawn balls
India also faced disappointment in other matches of the day. The Indian pair had to face defeat from Namibia in the women’s doubles event of lawn bowls. However, even after this defeat, the Indian team is not out of the tournament. According to the points table, they are still in the race to reach the semi-finals. The team will have to perform better in the next matches.
Now all eyes are on Mirabai Chanu
After Rishikant’s silver, now India’s hopes are from star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu. Olympic medalist Mirabai will take to the stage today. He has a chance to win his third consecutive gold in the Commonwealth Games. If she gives her best, it is certain that India will get another gold.
Apart from this, India also has chances of winning 2 more medals in other categories of weightlifting. The coach and the federation hope that weightlifting will further increase India’s medal count.
India’s journey so far
India has so far won one silver and one other medal in CWG 2026. Even before Rishikant, an Indian athlete had finished on the podium. The Sports Ministry and the Indian team have praised Rishikant’s performance. This weightlifter from Manipur proved that with hard work records can be made even on the big stage.
The next few days are important for India. Along with Mirabai and other weightlifters, there are also medal hopes from athletics and badminton. Fans are hopeful that India will return from Glasgow with a good haul of medals.
