A very sad case has come to light from Ahilyanagar district of Maharashtra. Here a 19 year old NEET candidate allegedly committed suicide. The student wanted to become a doctor, but due to not getting the expected marks in the examination, she was deeply shocked. Police have also found a suicide note from the spot, in which he has written not to hold anyone responsible for his death.
This incident has happened at a time when there is continuous controversy regarding NEET exam across the country, demand for improvement in the examination system and increasing mental pressure on students. For the last several weeks, students kept protesting in Delhi and demanding transparency and accountability in the examination system.
What is the whole matter?
1. The deceased student was a resident of Jalalpur village of Karjat taluka of Ahilyanagar district of Maharashtra. According to the police, he had given the NEET exam held on May 3. She also appeared in the re-examination held on June 21 following the revised examination schedule.
2. According to family members, the student expected that she would get more than 300 marks. When the results were declared he got 166 marks. It is being told that to qualify, 177 points were required and she fell behind by 11 points.
3. After getting low marks, she started feeling very disappointed and upset. According to the police, the incident took place on July 25 at around 4:30 pm.
4. At that time the student’s father and brother had gone to Pandharpur for the darshan of Ashadhi Ekadashi. His mother was doing domestic work at home. The student went to her private study room.
5. When he did not come out for a long time, the mother opened the door of the room, where she was found hanging. After this he was declared dead.
6. Police found a handwritten suicide note of the student from the room. The note read, “Due to not getting the expected marks in NEET and not fulfilling my dream of becoming a doctor, I went into depression.” He also wrote that his parents or brother should not be held responsible for his death.
7. According to officials, the family has not alleged any kind of conspiracy or criminal incident. This incident has come to light at a time when the debate regarding NEET exam is going on in the entire country.
8. Questions are constantly being raised regarding improvement in the examination system, transparency and increasing mental pressure on students. For the last several weeks, thousands of students demonstrated in Delhi demanding improvement in the examination system and fixing accountability.
9. Student organizations said that the continuous uncertainty regarding the examination process has had a deep mental impact on the students. Amidst increasing pressure on this issue, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had resigned from his post.
10. Student organizations have demanded permanent and structural reforms in the examination system, so that such a situation does not happen again in future.
