India’s Raja Muthupandi won a silver medal in weightlifting in the 65 kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026. The 26-year-old Raja Muthupandi lifted a total of 286 kg (126 kg in snatch and 160 kg in clean and jerk) and finished second. This is India’s fourth medal in this competition, and the impressive performance of the Indian weightlifting team has continued. Meanwhile, Aznil Bin Bidin Mohamad of Malaysia lifted a record weight of 299 kg to win gold, his third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Muthupandi lifted 126 kg in the snatch round

Raja Muthupandi made a strong start to his campaign. He took the lead in the snatch round by lifting 126 kg in his second attempt. He then successfully lifted 160 kg in his second attempt in the clean and jerk round. With a total lift of 286 kg, he earned a silver medal for India in Glasgow.

A King’s Struggle Journey

Born on January 12, 2000 in Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu, Raja rose to prominence in 2017, winning medals at the Commonwealth Youth and Junior Championships. He then represented India at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games at the age of just 18 and finished sixth. Following this, a serious elbow injury in 2019 nearly ended his career, which ruled him out of the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Between 2019 and 2025, he underwent three major surgeries. First, he suffered a serious injury to his left corner. Subsequently, he was treated for appendicitis. When he tried to make a comeback, he injured his left knee during the national championships and had to undergo surgery.

At the 2025 World Championships, he lifted a career-best 299 kg and finished ninth. His silver medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games took India’s medal tally in weightlifting to four. India has so far won one gold, two silver and one bronze medal in the tournament.

Ahead of Muthupandi at the Commonwealth Games, Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu won her third consecutive gold medal in the women’s 48 kg category, while Chanambam Rishikanta Singh won the silver medal in the men’s 60 kg category.
