Maruti Suzuki’s big bet, aims to reach 9 lakh sales of CNG cars, will play big in SUV segment also

Maruti CNG: Amid rising fuel prices in India, the demand for CNG cars is continuously increasing and the country’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki seems to be getting the biggest benefit from it. For your information, let us tell you that the company has set a big target for the financial year 2026-27. In which Maruti hopes that this year the sales of its CNG cars can reach 9 lakh units which will be about 30 percent more than last year. At the same time, the company is now rapidly expanding the scope of CNG not only in small cars but also in the SUV segment.

Petrol-diesel expensive, CNG becomes first choice of customers

Maruti Suzuki India’s Senior Executive Officer Partho Banerjee has said that in the first quarter of FY27 i.e. April-June, the company sold 2.2 lakh CNG cars, which is a huge increase of 58 percent as compared to the same period last year.

The company says that due to the ongoing tension and war in West Asia, the prices of petrol and diesel have increased. In such a situation, customers are giving preference to CNG cars which give more mileage at less cost. Currently, Maruti Suzuki is selling 15 CNG models in the Indian market, which range from small hatchbacks to light commercial vehicles. In the last financial year, the company had sold more than 7 lakh CNG vehicles and in June 2026, the share of CNG vehicles in its total sales was 42 percent.

Now SUV buyers also move towards CNG

It was seen that till a few years ago the demand for CNG was mainly limited to small cars and MPVs but now the picture is changing. Partho Banerjee said that more than 50 percent of the sales of Victoris SUV are being done in models with underbody CNG tank. Keeping this trend in mind, the company has also given the option of underbody CNG tank in the new Brezza Facelift, which does not affect the boot space and gives the customers the facility to keep more luggage.

But for now the company’s portfolio includes many popular models like Brezza, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Ertiga, Invicto, Jimny, XL6, e Vitara and Victoris.

According to the company data revealed, the share of SUV in total sales in FY23 was 12 percent, which has increased to 30 percent by the first quarter of FY27. During the same period, the company’s total vehicle sales stood at 6,82,724 units while SUV and utility vehicle sales increased to 2,18,885 units. This indicates that the demand for both CNG and SUVs may become stronger in the Indian auto market in the coming times.
