Commonwealth Games 2026: Another medal in India’s bag, Bindyarani Devi won bronze in weightlifting

India Sixth Medal In Commonwealth Games: Female weightlifter Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam won the bronze medal for India in the 58 kg weight category on Monday. With this, India has won its sixth medal in the Commonwealth Games 2026. Rafiatu Folashade Lawal of Nigeria won the gold medal by lifting a total of 229 kg (103 snatch and 126 clean and jerk).

Ann Sophie Tashero of Canada placed second with a total of 215 kg (94 snatch and 121 clean and jerk). Bindyarani Devi stood third with a total of 199 kg, lifting 87 kg in snatch and 112 kg in clean and jerk.

In the SEC Armadillo, India’s star weightlifter Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam had the joint third best performance in the snatch round with a lift of 87 kg. Bindyarani successfully lifted 83 kg in her first attempt, 85 kg in her second and 87 kg in her third attempt. In the snatch round, Eliza Pratt of England also lifted 87 kg, while Bindyarani of India remained behind her on the basis of order of attempts (countback) despite lifting the same weight.

Rafiatu Folashade Lawal of Nigeria won the Commonwealth record and Games record by lifting 103 kg in snatch. Ann Sophie Tashero of Canada stood second with 94 kg.

Lifted 112 kg weight in second attempt

‘Clean and Jerk‘ In the round, Rafiatu Folashade Lawal made three successful attempts at 117kg, 122kg and 126kg. Whereas, Ann Sophie Tashero was successful in all three attempts of 111 kg, 115 kg and 121 kg. India’s Bindyarani Devi failed in her first attempt of 110 kg, after which she lifted 112 kg in her next attempt. In the third attempt, she increased her weight by 4 kg, but could not achieve success.

With this, India won the sixth medal in the Commonwealth Games 2026. In Para Powerlifting, Jhandu Kumar opened the account for the country with a bronze medal, after which Rishikant Singh won the silver for India in the men’s weightlifting (60 kg) competition.
