New Delhi: Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi won the bronze medal in the women’s 58kg category at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Monday. Birmingham 2022 silver medalist Bindyarani also showed her strength in the new category and added another medal to the country’s account.
Record made with 199kg
In the final of 58kg, Bindyarani lifted a total weight of 199kg. He started with 87kg in the snatch. Then successfully lifted 112kg in the first attempt of clean and jerk. In her last two attempts she tried to lift 116kg, but could not succeed.
Despite this, he secured bronze with a total of 199kg. The gold medal went to Rafiatu Folashade Lawal of Nigeria. He defended his title by setting a Games record of 229kg. Canada’s Ann-Sophie Tashero won silver with 215kg.
Bindyarani has won silver in 55kg in Birmingham. Now even after shifting to 58kg, he proved that the increase in weight did not diminish his courage by winning the second consecutive CWG medal.
Journey from Imphal to Patiala
Born on 27 January 1999 in Imphal, Manipur, Bindyarani started with Taekwondo. In 2013 he took up weightlifting. After training at SAI’s North Eastern Centre, she reached the National Center of Excellence and then the National Camp in Patiala in 2019.
She came into limelight by winning gold in IWLF Youth National in 2016 and Khelo India Youth Games in 2019. In the same year, he won his first major international title in the Commonwealth Championships with 183kg. He also has silver in Commonwealth Championship in 2021 and gold in clean and jerk in World Championship 55kg.
Return from injury and national record
Birmingham 2022 was his biggest success. In 55kg he set a CWG record of 116kg in clean and jerk and won silver with a total of 202kg. In 2023, injuries to both knees troubled him. During recovery, she remained at 55kg for some time, then returned to 58kg after becoming completely fit.
He made a strong comeback in 2025. In the National Games, she broke Mirabai Chanu’s national record by snatching 88kg. Also made national records in clean and jerk and total. She secured a place in the team for Glasgow CWG by winning silver with a best total of 206kg at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad.
Glasgow’s bronze is the story of their hard work and determination. Coming back after injury, adjusting to a new category and then winning a medal – Bindyarani again showed that the daughter of Manipur does not know how to accept defeat.
