A powerful earthquake of 7.4 magnitude occurred in the South American country Colombia on Monday morning, August 10, causing huge devastation. According to the latest reports, 132 people have died and 570 people are reported to be injured. 86 buildings collapsed across the country, while more than 1,500 houses were damaged. Relief and rescue operations are continuing due to the possibility of people being trapped under the debris.
18 health centers and 52 schools were also damaged. Apart from this, work has been stopped at 7 airports. Red alert continues in 5 cities. The President has called a meeting of the Emergency Committee and started monitoring the relief and rescue operations.
The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Chocó area. San José del Palmar Has been told. Its depth was about 100 kilometers. Tremors were felt in many parts of Colombia. In many cities including the capital Bogota, people came out of their homes and buildings and came onto the streets due to fear.
Most damage in Pereira

Several cities including Cali, Manizales and Quibdó were also affected. Many buildings including a hospital were damaged in Cali. Damage to historic buildings was also reported in Manizales. Roads, electricity and communication systems have been affected in many areas.
After the earthquake, work at many airports in western Colombia has been affected. Pereira’s airport was also closed due to structural damage. Keeping in mind the safety of passengers, officials have started investigating the affected airport.
Relief and rescue operations intensified
The administration has intensified relief and rescue operations in the affected areas. The debris of collapsed buildings is being removed with the help of heavy machines. The injured are being treated in hospitals. People have been evacuated to safe places in many places.
President of Colombia Abelardo de la Espriella Has declared an emergency and has given instructions to speed up relief operations. The government has assured all possible help to the affected people.
