MS Dhoni Unlikely to Play IPL 2027 as CSK Consider New Role for Franchise Legend: Report

The future of MS Dhoni in the Indian Premier League has once again come into the limelight with a new report suggesting that the legendary Chennai Super Kings player is not expected to feature as a player in IPL 2027.

The 45-year-old Dhoni has seen his playing prospects come under increased pressure in recent times. As reported by RevSportz journalist Rohit Juglan, the experienced ex-India skipper might opt out of playing next season and become a part of CSK’s setup.

The exact role has not been revealed yet, nor has the information been confirmed by the management. The possible role that has been discussed is that of a support staff member, perhaps with greater responsibility than an ordinary team member. Dhoni potentially could be offered a mentor-type role as part of the franchise.

Rohit Juglan claimed on his YouTube channel:

“That it’s very much possible that you won’t see Mahendra Singh Dhoni as a player next year. I don’t know in what capacity he will come. The things are yet to come out about what capacity he will join Chennai Super Kings. But today also, what I understood after talking is that again it’s becoming difficult.”

CSK Face Major Changes Ahead of IPL 2027

Dhoni’s future also arrives at a pivotal time for the Chennai Super Kings. The franchise did announce the exit of head coach Stephen Fleming after a disappointing season in franchise cricket.

CSK is now looking for a new coach to replace Fleming, and the signing of a new head coach can play a significant role in Dhoni’s position in the team.

This franchise has been heavily investing in rebuilding its squad over the past few seasons. Considering that the new coach is likely to bring in new perspectives, the squad could have more amendments prior to the 2027 Auction.

Juglan also claimed that Dhoni’s comeback as a player is getting harder and harder as CSK is closing in on auction and retention time.

Juglan claimed:

“As we are moving towards the next IPL, or for that matter towards the auction or towards the trade release retentions, it’s again getting difficult to think that, yeah, you will see Mahendra Singh Dhoni playing as a player. A lot will change. I have been telling you this from before. Around Chennai Super Kings, you will see a lot of changes, and I told you, people, three to four days ago around this that, you know, they are looking for a new coach.”

At the moment, there has been no official announcement from CSK about Dhoni’s potential role in IPL 2027. Dhoni’s plans are expected to become more transparent once the franchise announces its new coaching staff ahead of the auction.
