Automobile Desk: The dominance of electric vehicles (EVs) in India's automobile sector is increasing rapidly. On the strength of the infrastructure development policies and incentive schemes of the Central Government, an extensive charging network has been created across the country. Due to this, the 'range anxiety' (fear of running out of battery) of the drivers has been eliminated to a great extent and long distance travel has become very easy.
According to the new data released by the Ministry of Heavy Industries, till August 7, 2026, a total of 67,657 electric vehicle chargers have been commissioned in all the states and union territories of the country. This huge infrastructure also includes 1,139 'battery swapping stations'. Through battery swapping technology, drivers do not have to wait long for charging, instead they can exchange their discharged battery for a fully charged one and move ahead immediately within a few minutes.
The government has also given huge tax relief to encourage customers to adopt eco-friendly vehicles. At present, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate on electric vehicles and their charging equipment has been reduced to just 5 percent. Additionally, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has mandated special green number plates to identify electric vehicles and completely free them from complex processes for commercial permits.
Ministry data shows that the FAME India scheme has played a central role in accelerating green mobility in the country. In the first phase of FAME, 2.80 lakh electric vehicles got the benefit of subsidy. At the same time, under the FAME-2 scheme, operated with a total budget of Rs 11,500 crore from April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2024, sales of more than 16.72 lakh two-wheeler, three-wheeler and four-wheeler electric vehicles have been recorded till June 30, 2026.
Along with personal vehicles, the public transport system is also being electrified at a rapid pace. According to the data, till July 31, 2026, 5,299 electric buses have been put on the roads under the FAME scheme. On the other hand, 27,555 additional e-buses have been approved and covered under the 'PM-eBus Service-Payment Security Mechanism' (PSM) till July 10, 2026.
If we talk about other major initiatives, the 'PM E-DRIVE' scheme has so far facilitated the sale of 26.59 lakh electric vehicles. Along with this, the sale of approximately 21.30 lakh electric vehicles has become possible by March 31, 2026 through the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Auto Scheme implemented to promote manufacturing in the country.
